World of Warcraft passes the 11 million mark

PC News | In other news, 11 million people to never see the sun again.
It was only nine months ago we reported that World of Warcraft hit the magic ten million mark, but Blizzard has announced that it's already been surpassed with WoW now exceeding 11 million players worldwide.

This milestone was reached as the beta test for Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion for WoW nears completion.

"It's been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience."

Wrath of the Lich King will launch in several regions around the world starting on November 13.

I wonder if the downturn in the finical markets will take a toll in the world of warcraft!

wow is nothing like it used to be. They tried many different approaches to keep it fresh and entertaining but there's really not much left to do. Personally I doubt the real 'regular' players are anywhere near 11million.

That reminds me. One thing I hate about wow now is how they inflate everything by pouring gold into the game. Just makes the game that much less fun when everything is easier to get.

well, it's now cheaper for aussies to pay via the pre-paid cards than it is to get a credit card subscription.

Good effort Blizzard. If you dont want to play on subscription servers just play on a private server. icon_wink.gif

I wonder how well Warhammer is doing now.

Is that 11 Million "ACTIVE" subscriptions? If so, multiply that by the monthly cost of subscription and see how much money blizzrd is turning over!

Yeah whenever they release these figures it's always active subscriptions.

I'm glad WoW is nothing like it used to be. If it was it would mean I'm doing the same thing I was doing three years ago.

I'd prefer it if Blizz would release how many of these new players are on western servers, though. We know it's growing in Asia, but I'd like to see how subs are going in the west.

Also - Warhammer was on 750,000 subs at the one month mark.

this is probably going to sound like i'm a WoW fanboy trying to stick my fingers in my ears and ignoring WAR, but here goes:
doesn't WAR come with 1 month included?
750,000 actives after 1 month, to me, just means they shift 750,000 units - it'll take a few months to determine how they're going, and in all honesty, i hope it's well.

It does make you sound a little like a WoW fanboy icon_wink.gif

As far as I'm aware it's 750,000 who re-subbed. I could be wrong, though.

I reckon if WAR tops 1,000,000 subs after a year of release it would have been a fantastic acheivement, given it's niche PvP approach. Although guilds are hitting the max level now and the lack of end game content is causing some to question sticking around until Mythic get around to introducing some more.
