Carmack admitted that in-game advertising is not generating enough cash to support the web-based title, meaning that a subscription service would need to be implemented to make the project viable, though Carmack was adamant that the title would never become an entirely pay-to-play videogame.
"The in-game advertising stuff has not been big business," he noted. "That's not going to be able to carry the project."
Quake Live subscriptions will give players the opportunity to configure and run their own private servers for the online shooter.
"Quake Live is gonna be Quake Live for the foreseeable future," he said. "It's only just now that we're going to be able to put it to the test."
Currently there is no specific timeline for the move.
