StarCraft II Regions won't need new clients

PC News | Blizzard are listening.
With StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty now out and about, many fans of the game have shown some annoyance with the region locking that Blizzard has set up, particularly with Australia. Though we were promised access to the North American servers sixty days after release, the initial idea required us to download another full client of StarCraft II in order to play with our American friends. This isn't the case anymore.

Blizzard today announced that instead of downloading another client in order to play on the NA region, we'll be given a patch, allowing us to choose which region to play on from the get go:

"Instead, we are currently planning for an in-game region selector to be added via a patch at the same time or before NA client access is provided to SEA/ANZ players. Using the in-game region selector would enable you to choose which region you will play in after opening your existing copy of StarCraft II. If an in-game solution can’t be implemented right away, then alternatives will be provided, such as offering a small file download that would duplicate the intended functionality and allow your existing client to access the NA region." The full article can be read here.

This will come as great news for most Australians, as our bandwidth tends to get eaten up real quick when he have to download large files. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is out now across the globe, and you can read our glowing review on it right here.

Except that everyone got a region locked version? It was to try and improve ping, but they should have just put us with the US version, which fortunately they are changing.

Why not just put in an option to search by region? Why limit people to what they can choose?

Cause they can?

Well at least I don't need another 10GB install to play the same game on a different server. Good news I guess.

Ugh... I acted per-emptively and grabbed the US client anyway earlier this month... what a waste. icon_sad.gif Oh Blizzard... WHHHYYYYYYYY?!?!??!111

Not surprised....that majority of the 10+gb of data will be the same for every region, a small patch will just change the servers it points to when you log in.

Wish they would hurry up though!
