The game, predictably, takes place in the year 2142. There's even a loose storyline to it - a new ice age is dawning, and the ground that isn't left frozen can't feed everyone on Earth. Or come to close to it, either. As a result, two superpowers clash over the soil - the European Union or the Pan Asian Coalition.
The most interesting inclusion to the game over Battlefield 2 and its expansions is the Titan mode. In the game, Titans are gigantic warships - to win, you have to destroy your opponent's Titan, while making sure they don't do likewise to you. It doesn't sound like an easy task, either - first you must disable their shields, board it, reach the centre of the ship, then plant explosives. Sounds like a barrels of fun (also sounds a lot like Star Wars: Battlefront II's space battles - Ed).
Plus, there are also 'customizable abilities', which will apparently allow players to change some attributes to help match their 'playing style'. Just how flexible this will be remains to be seen. Aside from that, there's other smaller additions, like sentry guns, new mech vehicles and advanced weaponry.
The screenshots in hte media panel are taken from the official trailer - apparently in-game - which you can find here, among other places. The game is shaping up for a Q3 release this year. If it's as good as the past games in the series, it might be best to prepare for some long nights.
