Spore delayed until 2008

PC News | Next April is now earliest possible release date.
EA has revealed in its quarterly conference call that ambitious PC title Spore won't be on shop shelves until April 2008 at the earliest.

Spore is the brainchild of Sims creator Will Wright, and sees players begin life as a simple microbe trying to survive. From there, the single-cell creature gradually evolves from its microscopic origins into an intelligent, tool-using race. Players guide their species as it builds (and the player designs) villages, buildings, cities, and vehicles.

Hopes for a 2007 release have now been dashed however, thanks to the game slipping out of EA's plans for the current financial year. Nonetheless, EA's enthusiasm for the title is high, with EA bigwig John Riccitiello reassuring analysts, "Spore is a title we have enormous confidence in. I've had the chance to review the title three times in my short return to EA, and it looks fantastic.

"I will also tell you that its release will be right up [to] the bubble in Q4 [of fiscal '08], if not sometime in early fiscal '09, so we don't feel comfortable in forecasting it."

Boo. Boo and Hiss! I've been waiting on Spore ever since that GDC presentation video was released, and hearing that it won't even make this year is a bit of a kick in the teeth. I'm sure there'll be enough decent games coming out this year to keep me busy and all, but they won't be Spore icon_sad.gif

Damn.

I wonder what they're doing with it, because at GDC last year it looked amazingly good and hell, almost finished. Can't imagine what another two years of development will do for it.

Crap! Obviously it's better than releasing a half finished title, but still it's hard to play the waiting game. This is the one PC game that I've ever even considered rushing out to buy. Looks awesome!

Sounds like the graphics will be a little dated by the time it eventually arrives. But then if this is successful with all groups of people like the Sims, graphics won't matter.

They hired Soren Johnson to work on Spore. That guy did amazing work with Civilization IV, perhaps he's there to help get Spore back on track. Maybe there are some visionary development difficulties?

Soren Johnson has a BA History just like I'm studying. No wonder he did great work on Civilization.

Considering that Spore generates everything on the fly in terms of creatures and such (or something like that..forgot the term they used for it), I'd imagine that'd cause a f**kload of bugs and errors in code. So IMO the delay isn't suprising.
