Next LoTRO content pack imminent

PC News | Adjustable UI, new monster play, and critters.
The world of Middle Earth continues to grow with Codemasters announcing the launch of second major content pack, due to land on the 21st of August. And, it's a doozy - over 100 new quests, UI updates, new play options, and reputation / bartering. It wasn't a bad game to begin with, and the update's not bad for the high, high price of free!

Titled Book 10: The City of Kings, the expansion continues the story from Book 9 with Amarthiel reclaiming the palantir of Carn Dûm. As she tries to consolidate her position in Annúminas, she also searches for Narchuil, her lost ring of power. The Dúnedain are now the last line of defence and have the opportunity to cripple Sauron's war machine.

The update includes updates to monster play, giving players the ability to play as two new character types - players now have the option of clubbing the good guys as a Ranger of the North or a Troll. Should big smelly things not be your cup of tea, the update will also include critter play, functionality that allows gamers to play as one of the ubiquitous chickens running around. Apparently this is to be a regularly expanded feature, with Codemasters including additional critters over time.

Over 100 new quests have also been introduced along with a new reputation system that keeps track of you positive and negative standing with the different races of Middle-Earth. Complete quests and kill monsters and see your reputation increase! Those trophies you've been collecting from unique monsters are now actually worth something too, with the introduction of the bartering system allowing players to swap their trophies, armour sets and mounts.

And finally, something people have been crying for since launch - a customisable UI. Now featuring the capacity for skins, it'll also allow players to scale the different aspects of the UI with various sliders.

As previously promised by Codemasters, many more free content packs are planned. Speaking of the update, Turbine's CEO Jeffrey Anderson said, "We are working very hard to deliver the most content and best experiences to our subscribers and it is extremely satisfying to see such a large number of players embracing the game and joining us in Middle-earth. We intend to continue our long established reputation of delivering frequent and substantial updates to our players with the release of Book 11 this autumn which will offer players the opportunity to live in their very own house in Middle-earth!"

i really have to get back into this game - i haven't really played it for some time.

i guess it good in this case that i got a lifetime subscription, instead of paying monthly.

eh its already out? guess it didn't have much impact on the wow community if i've read nothing about it since the beta testing.

yeah, it's been out for 3+ months now.

i know a few people/guilds who left WoW for LOTRO, but mostly from PVE/RP servers, as this is much more geared toward them than PVP players - as the Monster-Play rules are somewhat broken/unbalanced. so depending on which WoW Ruleset you play, it could explain why it didn't have much effect.

100 more quests? Cool! Wonder how many of them involve pies.... icon_razz.gif

I tried out LOTRO on a guest pass after I got a bit bored in WoW. Found the game pleasant enough, easy to play but it never really clicked for me unfortunately. I found the graphics and the artistic direction fairly bland and the character animation seemed so jerky. One guy I know sold his WoW account and picked up a LOTRO lifetime membership, but he's a big fan of the Tolkein lore so it was a natural fit for him.

Looking at the account management screen you just buy a retail copy of the game, then select the Lifetime Membership option:

The monthly LOTRO subscription options (in U.S dollars) are as follows:

* $14.99 per month
* $41.85 per 3 months
* $77.70 per 6 months
* $143.40 per 12 months
* $299 Lifetime Membership. Lifetime Membership means you'll never again have to pay a subscription fee for LOTRO*!
*Lifetime Membership is available only for so long as the game as in service.

Heh, and I cancelled my account last month. Waaay to much of a time commitment for me to keep pace with the rest of the pack.

Oh well. Maybe this'll get me back into it.

wow - looks like they changed it.

it was initially only available to those who pre-ordered, and got the Founder's Edition (which was different to the Collector's Edition) and then you could choose to pay either $10/month, or $175 for lifetime.

if they're adding Lifetime Subs for everyone, even at a higher rate to Founders, i'm guessing the pick-up hasn't been as high as they'd have liked.
