New Mortal Kombat Game Announced

PS2 News | Midway announces new action/adventure spin-off, due in 2005 - Annual Mortal Kombat releases confirmed.
Midway has today confirmed the development of their next major title in the Mortal Kombat franchise, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. The next instalment in the popular series will (not for the first time) break away from the usual fighting trend and will rather be an action/adventure game that explores the world and mythos outside of the Mortal Kombat arena. The game is currently scheduled for a Q4 2005 release and is in development for both the Xbox and Playstation 2.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks will see familiar characters such as Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Mileena, and Baraka, and not to mention a range of familiar arenas from past Mortal Kombat games along the way.

The game will feature single-player and co-operative modes, although it’s currently unknown whether or not the game will be compatible with online features. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks will contain interactive background features such as acid pits, spikedwalls and a number of other deadly booby-traps, very similar to Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.

In other news, in a bid to satisfy the fans, Midway has also announced a commitment to release a new addition in the Mortal Kombat franchise annually(one a year). "Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something that Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the Mortal Kombat universe every year," Midway president David F. Zucker commented, adding "We are planning our Mortal Kombat release schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new Mortal Kombat title annually."

It’s still hard to understand whether or not this will maintain the level of quality for each game, but it’s something we’ll find out soon enough. PALGN will have more information on Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and future Mortal Kombat titles as soon as it becomes available.

hmmm... while i really like the proper fighting games (MK-MK3, MK5... didn't like MK4) i've really hated the spinoff games (subzero and special forces) so i don't know what to think about this one...

maybe if they actually finish it, rather than release a half-arsed attempt it might be ok...

i also don't know what to think of the annual MK proposition... if they set out to release a fighting game every 2 years with a spinoff every other year, quality might be maintained, but i think the problem with MK's 3 and 4 were that they got silly... especially in the gore/???atality department... and while the MK5 fatalities are nothing new or fantastic, at least the shift has been more towards gameplay than the emphasis on gore...

i, for one, will be waiting for more news...

Sigh not another icon_razz.gif

The only Mortal Combat game I owned, was MK3 on the Sega Mega Drive (which I loved) and the only MK games I have played are MK3 and the first MK came out on the PS2!

I say something about this a while back, I thought it might work, but I wonder when it takes place, as Kang is dead at this point in the storyline...
