24: The Game Preview

PS2 Preview | Saving the World, one ad break at a time.
Well here's one we missed at E3. Amongst the hundreds of announcements and games we heard about, it appeared one slipped under our radar: 24: The Game. And despite the reputation deservedly sported by videogames with their roots in TV and film, this is actually one title that we're eagerly anticipating.

For those of you who dwell beneath rocks, 24 is ranked the number one TV series among 25-54 year olds in America, with over 6,000,000 viewers. Europe has mirrored this success, with over 10,000,000 viewers across five countries. The television show is also consistently ranked in the Top 20 shows in Australia. It's popular. Very popular. So why it hasn't been been developed into a game prior to this we don't know.

Sony has picked up the exclusive rights and are developing it internally, so the game will only be available on the PlayStation 2. In the title, players take control of and live a brand new day in the life of Jack Bauer and the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). The game is set between Season 2 and Season 3 of the television series, and will thus answer some of the questions that many viewers of the series felt were left unanswered in Season 2. Such as: who was really behind the assassination attempt on President Palmer? How did Kim Bauer get a job in the L.A. CTU? And how did Jack Bauer and Chase Edmunds first start working together?

In a promising move, the game is going to be scripted by the same writer as the television show (Duppy Demetrius), which means the storyline should be up to par, with the usual twists and shocks along the way. The music will be composed by Sean Callery who provides the music in the television show, so there's a significant part of the 24 production team involved with this. The visual cut-scenes will also intertwine to advise gamers how much (or how little) time they have left.

Without authenticity this game would be nowhere near as good as it could have been and the game will feature the likeness and voices of many of the stars from the show, including Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), Kim Bauer (Elisha Cuthbert), Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) and more, as well as new characters to the game which will be revealed throughout the plot.

Sony are promising that there will over 100 missions and yes, the game will go for 24 hours. If a player misses a goal in 24, then they have to make it up, the story will continue, with or without the successful completion of a mission. We're hoping this will make the game playable more than once - it certainly points to the game having a fairly non-linear style.

The game should feel authentic with real voices and likenesses

The missions in the game are what are going to be most interesting. Whilst the game is primarily a third person shooter, there is going to be a large variety of missions. The sections can be divided into four elements, with on-foot sections (with shooting, stealth, puzzles and sniping), driving challenges (varying from stealth driving to high speed pursuits) interrogations (aggressive and defensive) and gadget sections (which consist of decoding information and exhamining satellite images) all covered. This should ensure the missions never become repetitive and the game won't feel overly samey.

24: The Game will see a release in September this year in Europe and Australia. No date has been set for America, so PAL regions will get the title first for once, and we'll have more on the game shortly. Stay tuned.
Overall:
24: The Game could be one of the best TV shows that has been developed into a game: fingers crossed that come September we'll be running out of time.

i remember hearing a while ago that Sony had won the rights to 24, and at the time i was pretty excited to hear it, but that was during the first series, when i was still into the show...

now, i don't care... it doesn't sound half bad in theory... and having the plot moveable with or without completed targets may or may not be a good thing... it could end up like Deus Ex, in which the endings have no relevance to what you did before, you just need to complete 1 factions final task to get their ending...

if they did it right though... it could be amazing...

i do remember there being many jokes along the lines of "at least we'll know the play length"

yeah we avoided that cliche. I am really pumped for the game, fully into the show so it has huge potential, the setting shows just how long the title has been in development, we'll see icon_smile.gif
