Singstar Rocks! Preview

PS2 Preview | What will you be rocking out to?
The Singstar franchise has had phenomenal success in Australia and the UK, and ever since the game first came out Sony have been releasing new disks with new tracks every six months. The last incarnation of Singstar was Singstar 80's and we thoroughly expected Studio London to release either a Singstar 70's or Singstar 90's. Surprisingly though the next Singstar title will focus on a genre of music and this time it will be rock music, we thought we'd take a look to see if Singstar really will rock.

Anyone not familiar with the concept of Singstar won't take too long to pick it up. The game comes bundled with two microphones or if you own any of the previous titles then you can buy the game without the microphones. The two microphones go into an adapter that goes into one USB port on the PS2. The microphones and the game work together to judge the quality of your voice and at the end of the song the game gives you a score. The game also contains authentic records and real video clips which certainly helps. If you have an Eyetoy then you can turn it on so that you can see yourself whilst you're singing, but we don't really see much of a use for doing that unless you like looking at yourself, a lot.

Singstar Rocks! is likely to remove the rap battles as none of the songs in the game seem like they will be suited to rap battles. The game will support battles for up to four players, but we're hoping Studio London slip in eight player support towards the end of development. All of the multiplayer modes from the previous games will make it into this title, such as pass the mic. We're not sure if there will be a more scoped out single player mode although it doesn't seem like it. It would be good if Studio London added some incentives in there for those who prefer to play alone though.

The most important factor when considering whether to buy this game or not is the track list and thankfully this game contains one of the best track lists in a long time. There are a few Australian exclusive songs, but we're not sure yet what exclusive songs the UK version of the game will recieve. The Australian version of the game will contain the following songs.

It really does seem like Singstar Rocks! isn't going to change much of what has made Singstar so popular. It would be really good if Studio London would take a few risks and maybe add a few more than thirty songs or add more of a single player mode, but anyone who is drawn to the track list is likely to lap this game up come the end of April. Stay tuned to PALGN for one of the first PAL reviews around then.
Overall:
The game isn't going to revolutionise but if you like the tracklist then this is a game that is definitely worth picking up come April.

What happens to this songlist? If this is the UK version I'd import it over buying the Aussie one.

That is the latest song list given to us by Sony, so this is the Australian song list and the old list is the UK list, but the lists are always tentative so could change.
