AFL Premiership 2007 announced

PS2 News | AFL is back - we have the first images.
In an announcement which was originally revealed by PALGN back in October, Sony has officially announced that AFL Premiership 2007 is on the way for the PlayStation 2. The game is set for release on June 28.

Sony didn't reveal too much about what we can expect from AFL Premiership 2007, but did indicate that you'll be able to edit all aspects of the player's appearance. There will also be a comprehensive set of modes and stats, including Match, Season, and career information, plus enhanced difficulty levels.

Managing Director of SCE Aust. and New Zealand Michael Ephraim, said, "It’s very exciting to have an Australian team like IR Gurus behind the development of this title. The synergy between Australia’s leading football code, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and one of Australia’s finest development teams can only mean that this game will be a huge hit with Aussie football fans."

IR Gurus Managing Director Andrew Niere added, "It’s been a fantastic experience to have worked on this title. Combining real life professional football standards with the technology that’s offered by the PlayStation 2 has been a rewarding experience. As Australia’s leading video game platform, it’s great to know that we’ve created a title that will be played across the country by football crazy fans wanting to lead their teams to victory."

Man, is there any signs of a visual upgrade here?

They're still barely recognisable, and some of the Guernseys look almost texture-less.

Uh, Freo's guernsey doesn't even look like it does in the screens.

I expect great things from this game. icon_shifty.gif

These games are always pretty much terrible.

Did anyone else play AFL 98 for the PC? Granted, my memory is a bit hazy, but that was a quality AFL game.

I've got AFL Premiership 2005 on PS2 - even with low expectations going in I have to say that it's pretty bad.

Don't expect visual upgrades when you're working on the same console and the same game engine.

Personally I'm tired of the lack of content these guys have been putting out. From 2003 to 2004 they added a few things - it probably didnt justify a full $99.95 outlay, but for cheap it would have been ok. But from 2004 onwards there has been absolutely nothing in terms of gameplay additions or content.

Some people may argue with me that this is a sports game, what more can you do? There are a zillion ways to get people to replay a sports game. More manager options, more minigames, individual goals for each player ie after not playing well for the last two games, Brad Ottens needs to kick four goals in the next match. Random achivements throughout the season such as finish in front of your rivalry team at the end of the season. Dynasty mode with a fantasy draft, dynasty mode where you can take a VFL, WAFL or SANFL team and take it to the AFL. Rewards and Collectables - Virtual Collectable cards of players with history and stats of the player.

Tons and tons of things.

These don't even need a rework of the game engine.

Fixing the gameplay would help as well, although I can't really comment on this because I haven't played it since 2003.

I had it but it never worked on my computer for some reason. It was EA so not expecting too mcuh.

I did play the AFL title on the NES - that was quality for its time. I remember the kicking, the marking and handballing was really intuitive and it just rained goals the whole time. Couldnt really expect much more. Real teams would have been nice, but it played a pretty good sports game on the NES, when sports games in those days were limited to stuff like Double Dribble, Tennis, Soccer. I tried out the rom recently but I played like less than a minute of it - it was that terrible.

Or, you know, the publisher could give enough time and funding for the current team to make the kind of game that the fans want... either/or icon_shifty.gif

Or Australia could stop being an unviable market to produce games specifically for.

Actually you might want to rethink that, I can be pretty sure those screens are a little old and the PS2 version (which will be the only version available) looks better now. IMO the improvements from 2006->2007 are much better than those from 2005->2006 and... I've probably said too much already icon_wink.gif.

As for a 360/xbox1 version, since sony are footing the bill I don't think they'd be too happy with supporting the competition. Complain to MS about a lack of a 360/xbox1 version.

Maybe everyone should take a look here:

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=288304

Most of people's problems with the past games are addressed here....and have been known for weeks.

i.e Freo's guernsey in the screenshot is one of their retro heritage jumpers which are one of many selectable jumpers for each team in the game...
They didn't just get it wrong!!!

VFL, SANFL, WAFL teams and leagues don't fall under the AFL's contract, and so can't be added into the game, along with other things that have legal restrictions from being included. (like fights/blood rule)

I thought Freo's heritage guernsey was white with a little bit of red?

EDIT: v Yeah. That one.

Fremantle has at times worn a white with red V for heritage games in keeping with the former Fremantle clubs that once existed long ago.

the Freo heritage jersey is white, with 3 red chevrons. Sydney has the white with a single chevron.

but this is an old-school WAFL (possible even WAFA - before it was consolidated into the WAFL) jersey, so if the game license doesn't extend to state level competition, like Black Mamba says, then it's likely that they (the devs) don't have permission to use it.

plus it also clashes with the Sydney (ex-South Melbourne) jersey, which is a problem in this years competition, as they (Freo and Sydney) are scheduled to meet in the heritage week, so it's possible that this one is the actual one they're planning on using this year.

christ i know a lot of sh!t about a game i don't even like.

EDIT: actually, that just looks like their Away jersey.

Sony got the Licence because Sony are one of Collingwood's Major Sponsors and Playstation 2 (3 now? but their uniforms haven't changed) Sponsors the Umpires, so Eddie got Sony the rights.

Nah their away guernsey is white with a purple anchor.

With Freo playing Sydney in the heritage round (didn't know that) it is fairly likely that they will wear a purple/red/green/white one, like the one in the shots. That probably explains it, then.

vvv EDIT TO SAVE OFF TOPIC POSTING: Yeah, in the last couple of years most teams have adopted a 'clash' away guernsey which is predominately one colour (most of the time white) which stands out from the teams they are playing. Before that I'm pretty sure you are right about what it looked like, though.

^ ah ok, i haven't watched AFL for i don't know how long, but last i knew the Freo away jersey was Green, with a white anchor and purple chest panels.

that was probably when they entered the competition though.

like i said, a lot of sh!t about a game i don't even like.

I can't remember exactly what guernsey it is....might be their 95 one or something....
Either way, it needed to be approved by the club and the AFL before it's addition to the game.
Some jumpers that are in are training jumpers....or one off jumpers (light blue Carlton one)...
It just allows people to select what they want to wear in the game....which is especially good for colour-blind people like my mate, who had trouble distinguishing teams in previous years...

Oh, so its got past guernseys as well? That makes sense then.
