Gran Turismo 5 'still about a year away'

PS3 News | Relish your Prologue rations.
With the release of the PlayStation 3's Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in the bag, fans would have been all too right to expect the full-fledged Gran Turismo 5 later this year. None too bright, but all too right.

Like any game publisher worth its weight in delays, Sony has announced via its PlayStation.blog that Gran Turismo 5 is looking like a 2009 title. Replying to a post in response to a GT5 music announcement, Chris Hinojosa-Miranda, Associate Producer SCEA, states rather unceremoniously that, "GT5 is still about a year away".

More amusing than the fact that it took more than a couple of posts afterwards for anyone to notice Hinojosa-Miranda's comments, or the undying debate across forums on whether GT5 Prologue is a 'just a demo', is that very few remember that this is the same structure of release Gran Turismo 4 received -- i.e. a Prologue version released a year or so before the 'full' game.

Coincidentally enough, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue hits stores nationwide today. So you can take out that giant marker and start counting down the days on your calendars... now.

Thanks to forum member mipac for the tip.

Im almost positive now that the PSP version is forever dead and buried. I guess i'll have to make do with it's closest rival: Micro Machines - Turbo Tournament..

Dang, thats some epic development times.

I know their racing games are polished to perfection but you'd think, given their sell-though rates, that they would expand their workforce and shorten their development times. If they'd released GT5 soon after the PS3 launch, and GT PSP last year, we could've been looking at GT6 for Xmas in 2009.

It just doesn't make sense that it takes them this long given the output of studios like Insomniac (Resistance:FOM on launch, Ratchet & Clank last year, Resistance 2 this year).

It's not like their games wouldn't sell so it's hard to understand why they wouldn't just amp up on man power and crank it out. The tech in GT:HD seemed solid, just lacking some mechanics polish, so id' assume their biggest holdup is art asset creation. Yet, they've had since Dec 2004 since GT 4 was released, and it'll be 2009 before we see GT5, that's a massive lag time between releases no matter how you look at it.

They have a lot harder development for a Gran Turismo than a Resistance. EVERY car company has to be happy with the way their car is represented, which takes a long time. That and it is supposed to take like 3 weeks just to do one car. Also, I think Sony gives a lot more development assistance to Insomniac, while Polyphony Digital tend to sit back and do their own thing on their own time.

But in the time it's taken PD to go from GT4 to GT5, we'll have had Forza, Forza 2 and Forza 3. It's not to say GT5 won't be good, but PD do take their sweet time developing.

And I guess that is why GT have such a high regarded name when people think about racing games, because of the sheer detail and effort they put into each game it is treasured. Sure, Forza can keep pumping out games but I think once GT5 is released it'll certainly lift the bar even higher that Forza was able to achieve with as many games it released during GT's development period.

Guys. If you just play Prologue, You'll see why they take so long to come out. It's amazing.

I'm playing Prologue.....Jaw = Dropped. And that's only from watching the intro movie.

The arguments in here have been exactly right, the attention to detail with the GT series is astonishing and does render the long development times for each game understandable. But then again, the GT franchise has sort have been in a rut too in that, additions that you could argue should be in the game (online play, damage, in-car cam - whatever) haven't been until recently. In-car and online play are in Prologue, damage is supposedly on the way but seriously these are features (especially online) that should have been in GT4. It seems like the push to make GT look as realistic as possible is taking the higher priority and in that case, games like Forza have shown it up (not graphically but in terms of direction these sorts of games should be taking).

I actually find it ironic that GT5 pushes for so much realism graphically. I mean sure, the game looks absolutely beautiful and anyone who denies that is silly, but at the same time, the game's art direction brings it down. It may look fantastic, but it still has a cartoony type feel (for lack of a better description) to it. Forza has this problem too; the game's art direction brings it down in terms of being completely realistic looking. The cars have nailed it (in both games), but track detail is still getting there.

I'll probably get debated on that last point, especially since I haven't played GT5 Prologue yet but whatever. Put simply, Gran Turismo's long development times are justified and it wouldn't be GT if attention to detail was non-existent, however at the same time there are some things that GT should have been doing years ago rather than just getting started now. Anyone ever heard of the catch 22?
