Grand Theft Auto IV Review

The Grand Theft Auto franchise needs no introduction, but we'll give it one anyway. Grand Theft Auto I and II (and the London expansion pack) on PS1 and PC were top down action titles, that provided the player with a sense of freedom. With the leap to the PS2, Grand Theft Auto III brought the series into true 3D, and was one of the first games to show what the '128-bit' consoles were capable of. It reviewed well, sold millions of copies and inspired dozens of other open world titles. Rockstar followed GTA III with more expansive sequels set in Vice City and San Andreas, but now, after years of hype, several trailers and even a major delay, Grand Theft Auto IV has launched simultaneously on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Has Rockstar reinvented the wheel (so to speak) yet again?

Grand Theft Auto IV opens by introducing the game's protagonist, Niko Bellic, an Eastern European who has fled his home country for a fresh start in the New York inspired Liberty City. He soon realises that his cousin Roman has exaggerated his successes in Liberty City, leaving Niko at the bottom of the food chain with no money and no credibility. While the story contains every New York gangster movie cliché there is, it is fantastically written and remains entertaining throughout.

Niko is given a mobile phone by Roman, which acts like a mini-menu for the game. Giving a character a phone in-game has been done before, but not on a scale like this. Missions come in via the phone, text messages are sent to Niko with hints, and it's even possible to call the characters in the game directly. If you're down on cash for example, you may want to call someone to request a job, just to get some extra cash.

Initially, Liberty City can be quite staggering in GTA IV. It's a stunning looking game, a stylistic and technical triumph, with masses of well designed geometry and textures and a great draw distance. The city is gigantic, but it isn't just a one block re-textured and repeated, every single street looks different. There are slums, which are more dangerous and have a greater police presence, as well as 'richer' areas, with more well dressed citizens. Not only is the city highly detailed but the citizens on the street are just as unique. They go about their own activities, such as talking on the phone, or even breaking laws themselves. Irrespective of what Niko is doing, the city seems to be going about its business.

Probably the most major non-graphical changes over the game's predecessors are the combat mechanics. Taking cues from dedicated action games like Uncharted and Gears of War Niko can now take cover behind just about any object in the game. There are also several attack buttons so you can punch and kick your enemies, locking onto an enemy is much easier then before, and players are no longer forced to fight against the camera when trying to target an enemy. Firefights are a lot more tactical and and also feel a whole lot fairer. The physics in the game are also absolutely brilliant as well, watching Niko fly through the air or accidentally hitting a pole while on a bike is simply hilarious.

The wanted level system has been reworked for the better. If there a cop near you when committing a crime then you'll automatically get a wanted star, but if you kill in a spot where there isn't a huge police presence you may just get away with the shot. If the cops are after you then the map will light up and actually show where the police are looking for you, if you manage to escape without the police seeing you then you're safe. This isn't too difficult when you're on one star, but as soon as you hit four or five stars police start popping up everywhere and avoiding them is extremely difficult.

Rockstar has dabbled in multiplayer before in the PSP GTA Stories games, but Grand Theft Auto IV takes it to a whole new level. Accessed via the phone, there are several options on offer. You can play ranked and unranked matches in several modes, such as deathmatch, team deathmatch, 'cops and crooks', 'turf war' and races, and can play in the city as a whole or in smaller areas. Sixteen players in a run and gun kill spree through the whole of Liberty City can be very entertaining. We did occasionaly get matched up in multiplayer with Americans where the lag was a little less tolerable, but for the most part the online multiplayer is a huge addition to the series. The multiplayer does have a few issues at the moment, we did occasionally get session errors during the game and often had trouble connecting to online games, but when it does work the multiplayer is very solid and should have most people coming back to GTA IV long after the single player campaign is finished.

What definitely can be said is that what sets Grand Theft Auto IV apart from other similar games are the details. There are hundreds of little touches in the game that you keep thinking could easily have gone un-noticed. Driving across bridges isn't a free exercise anymore, and players will have to drive up to a toll booth and pay the fee and if they don't then they'll be pursued by the police. If you try to steal a car and shoot the driver, sometimes the driver will fall on the steering wheel and the horn will honk repeatedly. In the grand scheme of things these are small additions, but with so many little details, GTA IV is a game that feels remarkably polished.

But it's not a game without flaws. There are a few technical issues; the frame rate does drop at times when things get hectic and there is some very noticeable pop-in when you're driving through the city. There are also a few glitches (such as body parts clipping into vehicles) - nowhere near as many glitches as in previous Grand Theft Auto titles, but given the production values they stick out much more. The lack of mid-mission checkpoints is disappointing as well, and really should have been fixed for the new generation. Internal environments can also be a bit of a problem at times, as they can be small and often the camera plays up when trying to navigate indoors.

It is worth mentioning that the Australian version of Grand Theft Auto IV has been edited. Although Rockstar hasn’t commented on what is missing from the local version, we do know that when Niko picks up a prostitute the camera pans to the back of the car, rather than moving around, but that's all we currently know about the cuts. There is still plenty of swearing, violence and drug and sexual references, so Australians shouldn't feel like they have missed out on too much of the 'mature' content.

As previously mentioned, it's a very impressive looking game. Liberty City itself looks absolutely amazing at times, particularly when one of the atmospheric weather effects are going, such as rain. Sound effects are also spot-on, guns and cars sound great, the background noise gives areas a great 'buzz', and the voice acting is fantastic. The soundtrack is just as stellar, with several radio stations playing all sorts of music, as well as the now-standard hilarious talkback stations

Simply put, Grand Theft Auto IV is the best game ever released in its genre, and is the new standard to which other open-world titles will be measured. Age permitting, this is a game everyone should have in their collection. It's by no means perfect, but it's addictive, entertaining, often awe inspiring, and will be remembered for years to come.

Calling a taxi usually takes about 2 mins, less if you use Roman's car service.

Great review as always. One thing I don't think I've noticed mentioned any where is the camera while driving, it becomes very difficult to judge distance due to the placement directly behind the vehicle, hence I'm constantly trying to force it up a bit. Personally haven't had an issue with the camera indoors so far, but I have noticed it playing up, just hasn't got in the way of an objective.

Good review, has much has I love the game is doesn't deserve a 10, for one, no damn usable trailers!!!!, and the others are but you've said in the review.

I have to agree with the criticism about driving fast... It's the only time I've seen the game lagging. A deserved 9.5/10

Am I the only one who finds the on foot combat to be incredibly frustrating and awkward? The controls are so clumsy and the camera, especially indoors, so awful, that combat becomes a chore. Honestly I think it drags the game down a lot. The same with the other GTA games. I was just hoping it would be improved in this one, and it is DIFFERENT... but I do not think it has improved.

I think the combat is so bad, that it reduces GTA IV from a brilliant game, to a good game. If I were a reviewer, I would be giving it 8 of 10.

As awesome as Super Mario Galaxy was there is a HUGE gap in what a game like GTA offers as opposed to something that is so linear, short and completely devoid of story in comparison. Absolutely no competition and it's good to see mature and massive production games like GTA making money because all I really care about is more games of this type. My Wii could catch on fire and I doubt i'd even put it out, it really is that useless for me when compared to games like this.

I'm not too fussed about the review scores this game gets, pretty much everyone can agree it's one of the most complete games ever made and deserves all the praise it gets.

There's only so many games based on rhythm, exercising, cooking, looking after pets and that sorta rubbish before a something really tech comes out and gets the spotlight back on the stuff that's really pushing the envelope and GTAIV is a prime example.

Having finished the game and playing the bejesus out of multiplayer I have to say that this iteration of the game as a series is pretty good, not fantastically great but genuine good fun. There are quite a few quirks in the game and various things that have been in the previous GTA's that are not in this version which makes me kind of boggled why they aren't in this version as they would not have been too much of chore to implement in the game and would have given it that extra bit of oomph.
Omitted side quests like the firefighting missions or paramedic missions I found to be alot of fun in GTA3 and would have been great in this version and they have the vehicles in the game so it should be do-able (maybe in downloadable content?)

Other than that the game is genuinely great aside from some weirdness with the Niko AI trying to get in the car with other cars packed around (wheres my 'grab the hood' and swing feet first into the open car window option?)

Another thing is I have been at ultra high speeds down mid town straights/bridges and haven't noticed any of the lag you have spoken of in the review but time will see i guess , maybe i've had lucky runs or something, also that gets me to another area of the game...why are the cops so easy to avoid in this game?I love the 'radius' of police search feature but have found it ridiculously easy to avoid the cops due to this new feature, eg go round the block a few times, bundle the cops into a bunch then leg it out of there just outside of the radius and stop the car...pfft surely the cops about 200 metres up the road on the radar should spot me but they don't.Same with the choppers , they seem to give up pretty easily. I've noticed a few people saying that they have had a hard time with the police and i really can't see how it's possible icon_lol_old.gif maybe i'm just a full pro elite GTA badass in this area of police escape or something but every time i'm at a high star level I'm wishing for some army intervention as the poice are piss-poor in this area.

Anyway enough of the gripes i guess, what i do love about the game is the banter of pedestrians, the awesome lighting system in the game (I've spent a whole in-day game just standing in the middle of times square just watching the lighting and shadows creep across from the buildings and the lights coming on at night time, really impressive)The weather effects are absolutely top notch and not just held to the clear/rain/fog scheme as each version of those weather types has their own variation on it, I've been in light fog to thick as pea soup fog, rain to thunder to crazy thunder and lightning on different occasions also and not just a transition of them but on seperate occasions differing strengths of the storm.

Those things mentioned above and the total randomness of the game and with the implementation of the euphoria engine causes some really amazing things to happen, like once I stepped out of my safehouse and instantly popped up the phone (I was standing dead still on the sidewalk) and it was raining outside.While I was flipping though the phone wondering what to do next a cop walked past and slipped on the sidewalk right near me, then got back to his feet and suddenly I had a one star wanted level icon_lol_old.gif It was like I got blamed for him slipping over.Hilarious.It's little random things like this which makes you think to yourself, omfg this game is just freaking awesome, what else am I going to see that is totally random like this.*loads game*

Especially with the brilliant multiplayer and the plethora of game modes.I mean honestly I can't even think to buy another driving game while I got GTA Race in GTA4.The cars handle brilliantly and to the detriment of a lot of whiners I hear saying "ooh the car camera is at a weird angle etc" well I love the car angle and if you actually have a look the camera is dead straight behind Niko's head.When you drive a car you are not sitting bang in the dead centre of the car you are on the side, which I think they have implemented perfectly for this game, I am so glad they kept that aspect.
The other multi player game modes are downright awesome too and quite innovative, like mafiya work where you and your team get a phone call off your boss and you have to do various different objectives while battling another team for the same objectives which are real varied like killing some NPC guy and picking up his severed head to throw into the sea to more subtle things like stealing cars full of drugs etc.All this going on with police, enemy teams and pedestrains leads to some truly chaotic times.
The few co-op missions that are there also are pretty good but I wish they could make them a bit more random as they get repetitive real quickly, and the other multiplayer missions I could go on for ages about are pretty much the same affair as other games like team deathmatch etc the only other differing one is cops and robbers which I have found in ranked matches have been so full of people that have no idea of the objective of what to do which puts me off a bit of that game type (time should fix that problem though as people get to grips with the jist of it)

Anyways enough of my ramblings...I'm off to play some more.

I'm speaking from a purely personal point-of-view here, and not from a PALGN writer point-of-view, but I believe that when you score games, you score them against others of a similar ilk. So just like you compare Another Teen Movie to The Breakfast Club and not Citizen Kane, you compare Mario Galaxy to Super Mario Bros World and not Vice City. Otherwise it just gets pointless - you can't possibly compare games like Gran Turismo and Puzzle Quest because they are just worlds apart, both in content, but also in what the player is looking for in them.

Games should be judged on how fun they are which is funnily missing from alot of the scores in reviews ,because the bottom line is how much fun you have with the game.
If you are having fun with it, the other things like graphics technical prowess/faults etc don't really mean ****.

In fact , games shouldn't even be given a score. If the review is done well enough there is no need for a score.

For me a game is a game, when I go to buy a game I have no criteria I need to satisy other than 'what do I wanna play', so i'm not looking for a particular genre or for a particular system, I buy the stuff that interests me. So when something impresses me i'm more likely to buy something again from that company or a game with those sorts of features.

Graphics are graphics, the better they are the more impressed i'll be so I have to rate it according to my preferences and not what the machine's preferences are, sure i'll take these things into account but you'll never see me praising a game's graphics just cuz it tried hard. No, it needs to actually perform well to get marks from me.

I know a game like GTA has had a lot more time, effort and money put into it than something like SMG and when i'm a purchaser of both games i'll compare the two because in the end they're both games. When the fun is comparable/debateable other factors such as length, graphics, sound, details etc all start coming into play to combine for an overall experience and I just so happen to find a lot more satisfaction in games that are pushing the envelope because I find those sorts of features to be way more impressive not only that but i find a sum of all it's parts always adds upto more. When you have a game that does 10 things perfectly and 1 thing is average and another game comes along that does 20 things perfectly but 5 or so features are mediocre are you gonna fault this game because it's done more? How can you? It's a superior and more ambitious project and should be judged accordingly. That's how I look at it anyways.

I can have fun on flash game for like 15-50 mins but in a game like GTA i'm having fun from 15-50 hours and thats a HUGE difference imo and it should have a bearing on the overall product. A game like GTA you're pretty much only limited by your imagination and not many games can offer you this sort of freedom with such a solid game. You have are taking more risks with a project like this so you should be reaping bigger rewards. It's simple logic imo.

See this is what makes people a true gamer I see too many people that are one tracked due to their stupid loyalty to systems/companies or hatred etc etc(which in reality is quite pathetic) that they seem to miss out on alot of great games that they would normally never play or try due to their stubborn-ness jaded view on other things.
It actually amazes me , do these people have vested interest in the companies that they back or are they so caught up their arse that they are blinded..i don't get it.

We're supposed to be gamers and when people get into a 3 team 'war' over crap over what is better, this system sux etc etc, well we all lose in the end.
Especially me having to read some of the utter tripe that comes out of peoples mouths regarding this.

Comparing SMG to GTA4 is just silly. Like comparing lemonade and cola. Sure they're both soft drinks, but each satisfies a different taste.

GTA also isn't pushing any envelopes. Sure it does a hell of a job of delivering a cinematic experience in a video game, a lot better than Mass Effect (and M-E did a good job of it, too) managed to do it. But I've found that parts of GTA4 are very Crackdown-ish or Saints Row-ish, so besides the very high quality of the presentation, GTA4 doesn't offer much else that is new.

And has anyone else had problems playing online (X360)? Lately I've had bugger-all success in getting into games because I'm consistently losing connections and a friend of mine is having the same problem. We're with different ISPs so the fault is either in the game or the LIVE service D:

If I boot the game up with the intent of only playing multiplayer for that particular gaming session, I have to sit through like 5 minutes of concept art and a loading screen before I can do anything. I admit the phone navigation is intuitive and makes for a seamless experience, however the delay isn't any fun (especially when online isn't entirely working >_> [at least for me at the moment T_T ]).

finally @ Spanca, when I get free copies of games to play with and review, then I won't care about reviews and scores (not to mention the obscene prices). Reviews are not strict numerical processes and I never said they were. Allocating a mark is a different story though.

And didn't the analogy contradict what that other guy said? The best game gets a 10, not the perfect game. But the perfect student gets 100%, not the best student. Because even the best student might not be perfect ;D

You do realise both those games are mediocre rip-offs of a genre GTA has created. So what if it doesn't do a couple of things aswell as those games, I guarantee it's doing over 100 other things better!

I think what you fail to realise is GTA isn't some gimmick with indivudual areas for different styles of games, it's a whole proper city, so even if you were to load up strictly mulitplayer games you would still have to load this huge city in because that is where it all takes place and that's where the concept art and loading screens come in. Once you're in this city/world/game environment you are free to do what you want, play the single player game, or player multiplyer or go back and forth all without leaving this world. It's the most seamless experience you can imagine and here you are complaining about it.

It's kinda funny reading about someone who tried Saint's Row first and doesn't like GTA as much because of it, as most people would have done the exact opposite. Also, don't go around calling people fanboys when they disagree with you, because more often than not, you'd be wrong.

Because PALGN reviewed the PS3 version. You've linked to the 360 edition.
So it was, I was under the impression that Luke was playing the Xbox 360 version... Still, the point stands. We're not the lowest score on the web. Also the versions are identical for all intents and purposes.

So it's a problem when one game, that is similar is style to another game, doesn't do everything that the other game does plus more? I don't quite see the logic there - do we not want varied play experiences? That idea works for licensed sports games that get yearly iterations perhaps , but that's about it.

Also, blaming QA for game design choices? Fail. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - more often than not, if there's a problem with the game QA have pointed it out. Whether anything is done about the problem (or whether whats being reported is actually a problem or not) isn't down to them. QA reports problems, they don't fix them.

Yea but that's not what the game is about, like I said no gimmicks, you're in this world or you're not, it's supposed to mimic real life in that the place all this takes place is supposed to be one cohesive world, blocking off parts would just be resricting peoples options, you're better off making your own rules within' the game and having people follow those.

It might not be a perfect game blah blah blah for that particular reviewer, but it does a lot of things for a lot of people. This game has already made more money than anything in entertainment history so nothing either of us say really changes anything. Other devs can only dream of the type of publicity/profits GTA gets.

I will say this...it's much harder to create something from scratch and then try and refine that then copying 90% of someone else's hard work and adding a couple of details of your own.

Fanboy? Righto Mr listen to my g/f educate me about games.. played Saints Row but didn't know what the hell GTA was? That's enuff for me, i'm not debating with a noob.

I just wanted to congratulate Luke on a supperbly written article. Which despite hype and pressure was written very objectively.

GTA is a great game, I haven't disputed that fact. I've just pointed out that it, like many other games, has problems. That's all.

Blindly telling me that this is the most seamless experience I could ever imagine is bordering on fanboy-ism, or so I think. Because, correct me if I'm wrong, but Burnout Paradise does pretty much the same thing for its online. So then which is the most seamless?

And where are you reading that I don't like GTA as much because of Saints Row?

4 years of production and then on release we get freezing issues? If QA picked that up and Rockstar didn't attempt to rectify the problem during that time... Then I apologise to the QA, and I guess I can blame Rockstar?

I think starting phrases with stuff like "Easy there Mr Fanboy" is a good way to ease yourself into the community.

Doesn't help that this is one of the most hyped games ever >_< with a following of people more fanatic about it then possibly every franchise ever created. Even Christianity.
