PlayStation Day 08: PS3 eclipses Xbox 360 sales in Europe

PS3 News | According to Sony, at least.
Sony has declared at today's PlayStation Day that sales of the PlayStation 3 have surpassed sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 in Europe.

Sony bigwig David Reeves made the announcement, according to GamesIndustry.biz, that European customers have picked up 5 million PS3's, 12 million PSP's and a staggering 48 million PS2 units.

"I'm also delighted to announce today that we have sold over 5 million PlayStation 3's throughout Europe," Reeves said. "We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price."

But the big news here is that the Japanese giant has already managed to sell more units than Microsoft, despite the 360's cheaper price point and earlier release date.

"We have sold more PlayStation 3's throughout Europe than Xbox 360 - even though they launched sixteen months before PS3. These numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand throughout our region, the ever-increasing number of titles being launched, the rich content on offer and its appeal to different demographics and cultures."

i think they were up to 800 000 in europe by april 07, so somehow they have sold 4.2 million since then, sounds odd to me......

Do you live in Europe? icon_razz.gif But yes, I do find this number a bit surprising, they've certainly sold a lot of consoles since the last I heard.

I find it Ironic how Sony crows about Europe considering how bad they've generally treated Europe. Late launch, price gouging on hardware and charging extra for PS3 versions of games. Sony be Praised!

At the risk of sounding like some kind of fanboy *gasp*, until I have a peer review journal on the topic. I'm going to find it hard to believe.

I've seen too many blatent marketing spins and straight out lies from Sony in the past...

Good on them, but the 360 wasn't really popular in Europe apart from UK so it can't have been that hard to beat.

That would have only been 1 month of sales though, since they only launched in late March 07 (in Europe). Even with that being the launch, with the addition of the 40GB and the holiday period, it sounds about right to me.

Not sure about the 360 number in Europe though. I know NA has always been it's strongest territory but I was thinking Europe would have still been around 6-7 million.
