PlayStation 3 outsells Xbox 360 by 45% in Q1 in Australia

PS3 News | Sales going steady.
Speaking in an interview to be published tomorrow on PALGN, Sony Managing Director Michael Ephraim has given us a bit of a look into the sales of the PlayStation 3 in Australia.

With Sony Europe's recent revelation that the PlayStation 3 had outsold the Xbox 360 in Europe we posed the question to Michael whether the PlayStation 3 has eclipsed the sales of the Xbox 360 in Australia?

The answer to that question, is no for now. But Michael did make the following comment: "we think it's a matter of time before we surpass the install base, but I think with Xbox, they've had a few strong English speaking territories, US, UK and Australia being one of them. In Europe they were very weak in Continential Europe, so they have done fairly well here, but with the rate we're going we will definitely surpass the install base, we're just guessing somewhere around the end of the year, if not sooner if the trend keeps going the way it is. "

Michael also added a little more information on the sales of the PlayStation 3. "I can tell you in the first quarter of 2008 we have outsold Xbox 360 by around 45%. That is not including the Bravia deal, which moved through around 30,000 units, so if you add the Bravia deal to our global sales we have now, in the first quarter of 2008 we have outsold the Xbox 360 by two to one. "

When do we get independent sales data? Australia seems so far behind everywhere else in reporting numbers.

GFK is the closest there is to 'independent data', but that excludes EB Games sales. Anyway, there is no real timing, it's normally when companies have some 'good' data to share (ie 300,000 consoles or X number of titles sold per week or something).

No Michael remember, we don't include the Bravia numbers.

Please remember for the future.

Thanks.

i don't know how off-topic this question is, but why aren't they included?
Eb/game stop are like the biggest game retailers in the world (or have i bought into the spin?)

Big W is actually the biggest I believe, I think (this is speculation nothing official) EB Games doesn't want to disclose sales figures.

Big W? That can't be right as I read somewhere on PALGN that EB Games has a stranglehold of 70% on the Australian retail gaming section. And 70% is a big piece of the pie.

I don't think that's correct. I'm only talking Australia.

Hopefully this means one thing:

MICROSOFT DROP THE DROP SO I'LL BUY ONE.

I think this gives Microsoft a strong ultimatum to come out with a major console update to try and get sails moving to combat the 2:1 sales. It maybe with what they are offering currently they're reaching critical mass for their market and they need to offer something more to entice people to buy. If this tells the tail of 08 for Microsoft they will have to change tact very soon.

Microsoft desperately need a 360-lite, with built in Wi-Fi, smaller form factor, and a 60gig harddrive, for $399 AU. I'd buy that day one.

im hoping they do sell a 360 lite, perhaps without all the rrod issues, its actually that which puts me off the 360, out of my friends with 360's only one hasnt rrod. maybe thats not a fair indicator but its enough to scare me off, funny thing is the guy whose 360 hasnt rrod'd plays his the most

I'd buy a 360 if I could be confident it wouldn't RROD on me within the first year of occasional use. That's the only discouraging factor. That and not having a decent telly.

The effects of the Blu-Ray win perhaps? I don't know if its just me but the advertising for Sony PS3 is everywhere at the minute. There's the GT bundle ad and sony playstation 3 and bravia are all over the afl's coverage's.

Well this is surprising news but it looks like Sony still have a solid user base that is just waiting to switch. That said I do admit that I have been buying up much more Ps3 games than 360 in the last few months due to the fact that I'm getting the feeling that a lot of people I know are also looking to get one in the next few months.

I think that with the Worldwide sales dropping in all consoles both PS3 and 360 need price drops. Interesting though with E3 round the corner and this rumoured wii-moteness device being planned for the 360, could that inject some spark into their sales. However, that being said if nothing happens no xbox-lite than price drops have to happen. Stop giving Australians, these supposed bundles to avoid dropping prices.

My predicitions:
Xbox Arcade: $299, Pro: $399 Elite $549
PS3: could be $549 or $599 (we would all like it to be the first but most likely it will be the second)

Continuing on 360 these price drops may seem radical but it close to entering its 3rd year in the market, it is possibly halfway through its lifespan. It time for the consumer to start thinking that surely the technology in the xbox can't be costing M$ that much anymore.

MS games department have a stated aim for 2008 of making their first profits in a decade of selling the original and 360 consoles, and they've made some too, although in reality the 3 year warranty billed entirely to last year undermines this, they want to get some cash while they actually can and stop looking like a cash black-hole. So i think that sadly, they'll probably try put it off at least til later this year, unless they are desperate to stick nails into sony's position.
