RUMOUR: Fallout 3 edited for Australia?

PS3 News | Retailers reportedly gearing up for the game's release. UPDATED.
According to the website Gamer Chip, a modified version of Fallout 3 may be released in Australia later this year. After the game was refused classification by the OFLC earlier this year, it was in doubt whether the RPG would ever see the light of day down under.

While there is no official word yet from the game's publisher, Bethesda, or the OFLC, Gamer Chip reports that retailers EB Games and GAME are now accepting pre-orders for the highly anticipated title. Electronics Boutique and GAME representatives have supposedly been informed that a modified version of Fallout 3 will be debuting later in the year. When contacted by Gamer Chip, a GAME employee said he had seen an internal communication confirming that Fallout 3 would be released in Australia.

Edits to the post-apocalyptic title reportedly take into account Australia's lack of an R18+ classification for video games. Specifically, Gamer Chip says that certain drug use (this being the reason why Fallout 3 was effectively banned in the first place) has been removed.

A search of the OFLC's database for Fallout 3 currently yields only the 'refused classification' entry. The game is also nowhere to be found on the official EB Games Australia website. But curiously, Bethesda's latest endeavour is still listed on GAME's site, and the company is even offering a special bonus to customers who pre-order the title.

Whether this rumour holds any truth or not, only time will tell. It's possible that retailers are only staying prepared for the possible release of the game, rather than possessing definite knowledge of an edited version. Stay tuned to PALGN for further news on Fallout 3 as it develops.

UPDATE: The Classifications Board has told Internode Games Network that a modified version of Fallout 3 has indeed been submitted for classification (thanks to forum member doppelgangbang for the heads up). This, however, does that mean the edited game will pass the classification process – it is possible that the RPG may be knocked back by the OFLC once again.

We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything new.

I knew it would eventually get edited, it's too big of a release to not get released. We will just have to wait and see what was cut, hopefully nothing too drastic.

It will definately be an import if the drugs are changed. What will they do? Implement medipacks?

My local JB has a printed sign in their gaming department saying they can no longer accept pre-orders of Fallout 3 due to legal issues, so only time will tell.

wouldnt be suprising if it was something as stupid as just changing the names of the drugs to something else.

Yeah, it will be as lame as changing it from Morphine to...

well if the only change is the word 'morphine', and nothing else gets touched, i'm ok with that

not happy it got refused classifcation, but will definitely welcome the game on our shores

Its tough to get it into the vein.

[UPDATE] The OFLC has confirmed an edited copy has been submitted for classification.

Here's some even better news.
http://www.kotaku.com.au/games/2008/08/oflc_has_new_fallout_3_classification_pending.html

This is taken from the article:
"The Office of Film and Literature Classification has acknowledged that it is has a new version of Fallout 3 from Bethesda, and is in the process of judging its appropriateness for our market. Note this build could also be refused classification, though it's highly unlikely."

I wouldn't risk it anyone.
Buy overseas and save money anyway. The collectors edition is nerfed in Aus anyway and collecting a game that has been edited would not likley be a worth collecting anyway.

They say one thing, and prob changed many other things. Don't risk it.

have spoken to guys at EB Richmond and Game Knox - They have the Fallout SKUs still on their systems. The Name for Fallout has changed on the EB systems -

I'd rather import than a neutered edition. Haven't gotten round to importing GTA4 (thanks MGS4!!) but will import that instead of local purchase.

As much as I'd like to support local retailers, smart dollar is on imports.

It's not going to be neutered. At most they're going to remove the images of the drugs in your inventory, or remove the animation of administering the drugs. And that is the most extreme thing they can do. That's absolutely nothing and will make no difference to the game whatsoever, the use of the drugs will still be there, it will be the visual representation that will be affected.

It's not like other mediums don't get neutered to suit regulations i happen to recall a few films that were "adjusted" to suit guidelines (Fight Club and The Butterfly Effect being two off the top of my head, although TBE was fixed up for the DVD release, Fight Club will always be editted) and can't recall any outcry about them so I think we'll be able to get over this one.

lol. has anyone seen the trailers/screens of it?
It's really a wonder they didn't ban it for violence.

I will be importing unless someone wants to give me a censored version for free, because I will not be paying for a censored copy.

Question people:

I used to like to support local retailers but recently I have been considering resorting to import only considering how much I have given up on the system here, we pay double the Americans do despite our dollars about the same and we receive censored copies due to the ramblings of an elected official.

Can someone tell me exactly why I should keep buying local? The retailers rip me off and the Govt (representing the people) neuter the industry as if its a kids toy!

This is not a "in the heat of the moment" rant btw, I have been seriously considering this move since the announcement of a censored GTAIV

I import nearly all my games. I get get them uncensored and for only $65 usually 3 days after launch. I'll be importing this and if you are smart, you will too. The people with the real power to change things are the distributors and the developers: the people with money. If everyone starts importing and sales on 'gimped' games drops dramatically in this region, the people with the money with put serious pressure on the government. We may have the louder voice, but when money talks, governmnet listens.

Im with you, i get my stuff elsewhere too.

From what we have been told no violence will be modified, so if they only change the drug names to fake names that aren't real i'm fine with the modified version.

If all that's removed is the drugs animations and pictures then I'll just pick up a local copy. It's just so much more convenient to stop at the local store than have to transfer funds into my paypal account which takes 2 weeks and then wait for it to show up in my letter box.

Set it up like mine where it automaticaly debits your bank account. Makes PayPal so easy! And only takes like 3-5 days to clear an eCheque.

I actually didn't know that was an option. Might just have to set that up in the near future.

I was afraid i would have to import and wait 1-2 weeks after release. May sound silly but Fallout 3 is my official GOTY - i just hope that it lives up to the expectations. I cant see why not - after E3 it looks freakin amazing.

It's not the retailers, it's the suppliers. Retailers are generally told what to sell it for and don't get a huge say on average price. Especially on new releases.

But I agree we pay a large amount for what we get.

That actually sounds fantastic, I've gotta see about getting a set up like that.

Anyone know anything about the 360 version being reigion free or not?
