While there is no official word yet from the game's publisher, Bethesda, or the OFLC, Gamer Chip reports that retailers EB Games and GAME are now accepting pre-orders for the highly anticipated title. Electronics Boutique and GAME representatives have supposedly been informed that a modified version of Fallout 3 will be debuting later in the year. When contacted by Gamer Chip, a GAME employee said he had seen an internal communication confirming that Fallout 3 would be released in Australia.
Edits to the post-apocalyptic title reportedly take into account Australia's lack of an R18+ classification for video games. Specifically, Gamer Chip says that certain drug use (this being the reason why Fallout 3 was effectively banned in the first place) has been removed.
A search of the OFLC's database for Fallout 3 currently yields only the 'refused classification' entry. The game is also nowhere to be found on the official EB Games Australia website. But curiously, Bethesda's latest endeavour is still listed on GAME's site, and the company is even offering a special bonus to customers who pre-order the title.
Whether this rumour holds any truth or not, only time will tell. It's possible that retailers are only staying prepared for the possible release of the game, rather than possessing definite knowledge of an edited version. Stay tuned to PALGN for further news on Fallout 3 as it develops.
UPDATE: The Classifications Board has told Internode Games Network that a modified version of Fallout 3 has indeed been submitted for classification (thanks to forum member doppelgangbang for the heads up). This, however, does that mean the edited game will pass the classification process – it is possible that the RPG may be knocked back by the OFLC once again.
We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything new.
