Alone In the Dark improved for the PS3

PS3 News | Developers respond to community feedback.
Atari has announced a significantly revamped version of the action horror title Alone In The Dark for the PlayStation 3, to be released with the title of Alone In The Dark: Inferno.

The new name is an indication of just how much has changed since we last saw Edward Carnby in the previously released Xbox 360 and PC versions. While the storyline remains largely the same, development studio Eden Games has been busy making a host of gameplay enhancements, in response to feedback from both reviews and gaming community forums.

An improved camera system, better inventory management and tuned controls are the major alterations, with various other tweaks put in place to make the game slightly more forgiving for the player, tipping the 'fun versus frustration' scale towards the pleasant side. In addition, the press release promises gamers 'an all-new action sequence revealing a previously unseen enemy of epic proportions.'

Check out the list from Atari below for a full list of the improvements:
  • Full 360 degree camera control: enhanced camera controls allows complete freedom of the camera and better handling of third person movement for even more immersive gameplay enabling players to view the fire and mass destruction they are causing in all of its glory.

  • Fine-tuned controls: quicker and smoother reactivity of the hero's movements in third person view increases the pace of the game and makes for faster, reflexive gameplay during tense fighting scenarios;

  • Inventory system more accessible: more logical jacket inventory system with the ability to scroll rapidly through the inventory with the D-pad or analog stick to combine objects. In addition, gameplay is paused when accessing the inventory system to allow maximum creativity in combining items to create unique flammable weapons;

  • More tips: additional on-screen tips will help players quickly adapt to controls and easily understand how to overcome tricky situations;

  • Spectral Vision tuning: a tutorial earlier in the storyline explains the need to burn roots in order to gain spectral vision (a power that grants you the ability to see the unseen) and difficulty tuning means less spectral vision is required to reach the end of the game;

  • Improved car dynamics and handling: driving has been tuned with increased suspension and reduced drifting giving overall better handling to make driving a fun walk in the park every time;

  • 59th Street level tuning: one of the game's most exciting sequences just got better. 59th Street has been tweaked for a more satisfying race against the fissure with difficulty tuning, an added checkpoint at Columbus Circle and clear voice directions given by Sarah;

  • Brand new thrilling action sequence: an exclusive new sequence has been added in Episode 6 for even more excitement and variety of gameplay in the episode.

A demo will be made available on the PlayStation Network in early November, with the full game scheduled for release a month later.

Now why were they unable to get such feedback from playtesters and incorporate that into the original versions?

This NEEDS to be in a patch for the 360 version. Especially the car checkpoint.

I really hate this “improving the game” ****. Get it right the first time or don’t bother at all.

So what happens to all the Xbox360 and PC owners of the games? You know, the ones that had to suffer through all the **** that is the very reason this new version exists? Do they get a patch to rework the game, or are they left in the dark?

They're boned like PS3 owner's were boned every time a game was ported from 360.
Good on them for fixing the issues rather than just porting it straight.

Hope those versions do get a patch though. icon_confused.gif <- I can't stop putting this smiley at the end of my posts! Halp!

Are those improvements good? I might actually buy this for the PS3, if they improved whatever was apparently wrong with the 360/PC version.

I've watched videos of the adjustments and they, in my opinion take it from a 6-7 score game to and 8-9. They've REALLY given the game a good overhaul.

I liked the ideas in Alone in the Dark. If they fix this up good, I'll buy it.

Amen to that, but suppose the development team got a second bite of the cherry with the ps3 release being later then the other consoles. Personally I would rather them wait and release all versions of the game at the same time but of the same standard.

If they released em all at the same time then they wouldn't have had feedback from the community to fix the issues?

I really don't see why trying to make your game better is a bad thing?

wish they add a no hud option & a few cheat code like god,wpn,ammo, this game will be exellent but these day no more good cheat for next generation at all.

^ I'm pretty happy with cheats being a thing of the past. I miss them occasionally, but that's just
me being lazy and not putting the effort into the game/s. I think it comes from better game design mostly.
There's less merit in cheating when a game has been designed so that you can get through it with a challenge -
rather than just plain impossible level design. Plus most games have regenerating health now - or plenty of pickups.

Yeah I mean what the hell? Ragging on developers because they're taking a second stab at something?

Good on them I say, it's a risky venture but I'm interested to see how it turns out. The original release was conceptually strong but poorly delivered in parts. I really hope they get it right the second time.
