Sony acquires publishing rights for Ghostbusters

PS3 News | Now a timed exclusive for PS3 and PS2.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Atari have issued a press release today stating Sony has acquired publishing rights to the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and PSP versions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

The game will launch on the PS3 and PS2 in PAL regions on 19 June 2009 to coincide with the Blu-Ray release of the original Ghostbusters movie. PSP owners however, will have to wait a few more months before being able to put on their proton packs and hunt all those ghouls and ghosts. Ghostbusters: The Video Game is set two years after Ghostbusters 2, and once again sees the Ghostbusters investigate a sudden rise of spirits haunting the streets of Manhattan. The story has been written by original Ghostbusters writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, while the film's cast will return to lend their voices to their respective characters.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Atari confirmed that the Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and PC versions are still planned to be released "later in the year". This suggests the Sony console versions will be a timed exclusive.

Well, well, this is surprising. I guess it's about time Sony fought fire with fire.
Hopefully it'll be a good enough game to actually warrant the exclusivity.

Damn. Was looking forward to getting this one soon. Hopefully they fix whatever bugs are there for the 360 version.

I'm torn between "well at least the PS3 will have a game to play on it" and "...and nothing of value was lost".

Not that I know anything about the title of course. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

I didn't see that coming! Need to wait and see if the game is any good first!

This is true, 360 have been getting all the exclusives with all the bugs/faults and PS3 always gets the top copies. It does happen, that's why i'm glad xbox gets more exclusives.

Aw, but I've already played the 360 version! Now I gotta wait longer?

Dude, if you honestly believe that then you are missing out on sooooooooooooooo many awesome PS3 exclusives. Not that I care; if you wanna be a fanboy then go ahead, the rest of us will ENJOY the game regardless of what system its on.

You do realise the PS3 had more exclusives in 2008 and this year don't you?

My bad dawg, must of got that thought as all my friends who have (some now had) xbox's had to keep returning due to crashes/breakdowns (some even twice), oh well, next topic.

Well this is a sly and annoying move. Guess it will get them more sales for the PS3 version this way. I'm just hoping the game isn't region locked and get it from play asia. Shame the wii is always region locked, they've been talking up the cartoon look and ghost wrestling with the wiimote.

very annoying.. the wii version of this was always going to be the best one, I'm not really interested in it on PS3.

I'm quite amused that you jumped on a joke about making a joke.

(I have a PS3, but the blu ray laser died and I haven't bothered fixing it yet since... you know... no games to play anyway icon_nn.gif )

Like I said, I hope the game is worth it, regardless of what platform it's on. I can't imagine it being very good, but I'd certainly like to be proved wrong...

So since it was Sony Computer Entertainment EUROPE issuing the press release, can I assume then that it'll only be PAL regions effected by this? I imagine that the US will get their Wii & 360 copies on day one?

Man, if that's the case, then that's a lousy move on Atari's behalf. Making half their audience wait whilst the other half gets it. I guess that's always been the PAL gamer's way.

^No no, Sony Europe issued the press release concerning the PAL release. I assume it will be the same in America.

According to Kotaku Atari have stated that North America will be getting all versions, minus the PSP one which isn't finished, on release. It's just PAL regions that are getting shafted.

Also we'll be getting the other versions of Ghostbusters in Spring as shown here: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/05/atari-360-wii-ds-pc-ghostbusters-coming-in-spring/

I stand corrected.

Odd, I wouldn't have thought this would have been the type of title Sony would buy the rights to for a timed exclusive.

...am I the only one thinking it has something to do with Phil Harrison working there now?

Ultimately this comes down to the clout of Sony Pictures. The Ghostbusters film was released in 1984, a few years before Sony Pictures acquired Columbia Pictures who released the film originally. This is why they can do what they've done.

I don't think it's fair but that's the name of the game. I do think it's fair though when games are exclusive to consoles when it's an IP made from the ground up for that particular system, like Halo or Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid.
