PlayStation Store Update - 12/06/09

PS3 News | VidZone's finally out, and so's Galactrix.
This week, Sony have finally released their VidZone music-video streaming service for the PlayStation 3, and shockingly it doesn't come as a firmware update. Instead, you have to go into the PlayStation Store and download the application, install it, and then it'll pop up in your Music column of the XMB. Also up is the long-awaited Puzzle Quest: Galactrix for all of your gem-matching needs.

PS3 Applications
  • VidZone - Free
So far, the service seems to be working fine. It's a little slow, but you can queue up multiple music videos to be streamed, make your own playlists, and play the videos full screen. The videos aren't in HD, nor are they widescreen, but the amount of content available on VidZone is very reasonable indeed at this stage. There is also an option to 'download for mobile', although few songs seem to support it, and it appears not to work for mobile numbers outside the UK and Germany.
PS3 Games
  • Puzzle Quest: Galactrix - AUD $29.95
An all-new iteration of the best-selling puzzle franchise, where you take on the role of a rogue pilot scouring the galaxy to uncover clues to an intergalactic mystery. Most likely those clues involve brightly coloured gems that you must move to form rows of three. But that's our guess.
  • Wolfenstein 3D - AUD $8.45
The classic FPS returns, with six episodes and sixty levels, all new Trophies and unlockable weapon upgrades for the upcoming Wolfenstein sequel for PS3.
  • Gunstar Heroes - AUD $8.45
The classic Sega Mega Drive shoot 'em Up returns with 'enhanced graphics' and online co-op multiplayer. We doubt these enhanced graphics are more than just a smoothing option, but it's a cool game nonetheless.
PSP Games
  • WipEout Pulse - AUD $29.95
The sequel to Wipeout Pure, Pulse delivers more of the high-octane speed and high-tech weapons you've come to expect from the franchise.
  • Ape Academy 2 - AUD $29.95
Like Ape Escape? Like mini-games? Then you'll love Ape Academy 2. It's logic, Jim.
  • Everybody's Golf 2 - AUD $29.95
Up to 16 players an play golf via infrastructure mode, or you can hit up the fairway yourself in several fun-filled game modes.

I'm grabbing Big Surf Island and Overlord II Demo as soon as I nab a bigger hard drive for my console. That Galactrix looks bloody pricey to say it isn't as good as Puzzle Quest (too complicated, tedious).

How much does Big Surf cost on the Xbox? Is it 1000 points (AU$16.50) or more? Just wondering if the PSN version is more expensive.

Wish they'd retool the the PSN store to make these updates unnecessary. And wish M$ would retool the XBL marketplace to not take 10 seconds everytime you select something... Lordy, how hard is it to create a decent shopfront?

Damn it, I thought we were supposed to get MGS this week icon_sad.gif

In my experience, everything on PSN is more expensive than the exact same content on 360. Big surf is about $3.70 more, the Prince of Persia expansion was about $2.50 more.

From what I can see, if its 800 MS points (about $13), then it will be 15.95 on PSN. 1000 MS points ($16.40) will be $19.95 etc.

I have actually thought about complaining to the ACCC about it. How can they charge more for the exact same content?

No, but I thought that was the point of vidzone.
To download and store videos (I think you get them in a higher resolution when you do so too) they charge you a fee.

I'm not sure what that fee is, or if there's a subscription model.
It'd be really interesting if there was though, and it was reasonable.

EDIT: Turns out that you can't download them, because it's all "on-demand".
Hmm, that's a shame, especially for us in Aus with limited quotas.

I would probably keep in mind that PSN doesn't charge you to us online co-op or competitive features in downloadable or full retail titles.

It still will end up costing a little more (depending on how much content you buy) but I don't mind.

Plus Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow was released for PSP (my bad if it was last week).

No, read my edit, there's no paying involved. You just stream what other people choose through a popularity contest. I imagine you can filter it by music genres too, though I haven't had too much of a poke around.

You can also search for music as well and add them to a playlist.

Vidzone was pretty good, downloaded, installed and was up and running in less than 5 minutes tops.

Search engine needs improving.

Vidzone is pretty damn good. Great range of songs, streaming is near instantaneous, and you can customise playlists. Subsidised by advertising, but it isn't overally obtrusive. Frankly there's no room to complain because the service is FREE.

I agree that the search engine needs improving... for starters, you can't enter search strings using a keyboard.

yeah but watch your interweb quota shrink while you use it... had a huge play around with it yesterday (from about 8am to 2pm. Off work due to an accident) found heaps of cool tracks, but used about a Gig an hour... for SD streaming content this is not good enough IMO... will have to use it sparingly... Loved the playlist option, no need to deal with others tastes, but as stated too high a price for what you eventually get... will only use it for parties.

Having a lot of fun with vidzone. Lots of clips, great to have on in the background while you are sinking a few beers with mates on a friday night.
