PSN to see Dreamcast releases?

PS3 News | Plus PS2 games for PSN, a Sonic compilation and a date for the PS3 motion controller.

A leaked minutes document of a Sony America and Sega meeting held on 5 August has suggested that Dreamcast titles could soon be released on the PlayStation Network.

The minutes document, leaked onto a PR FTP server, indicates that Sony and Sega have at least discussed the possibility, with Sega potentially giving Sony exclusivity periods on Dreamcast games in return for 'more marketing support' from Sony.

The PlayStation 3's as yet unreleased motion controller was also bought up in the meeting, suggesting a March 2010 launch in Japan, with North America to receive it shortly after.

Marked 'confidential' was a PS2 emulator for the PS3, with Sony apparently wanting to sell all PS2 games on the PS3. Ambitious.

Also discussed was the possibility of bringing Yakuza, as well as other unspecified Japan-only games to the West through the PSN, with the menus being translated into English with subtitles. In addition, a 'Best of Sonic' compilation for PS3 was mentioned, with the idea being to stuff all previous Sonic games onto a Blu-ray disc and selling it for about USD $99.

Was hilarious on GAF when the news broke. It also says a playtester found the first level of Alpha Protocol to be too difficult and that there wasn't much of an RPG feel to it. Dreamcast games on PSN could be a huge coup for Sony if they are willing to shell out for them. Could even lead to some old franchises being resurrected. *cough* Shenmue *cough*

Also, "Opportunity for PS3/PSP interoperability (see Eidos Batman, Army of Two, Assassinâ€™s Creed for good examples)." Didn't know there was a PSP Batman in the works?

I thought the question mark at the end of the title made it clear that this was by no means confirmed news.
Still, would be great to see Shenmue on the PS3

That'd be great if DC games to come on the PSN as well as some PS2 games (even if my PS3 has the rare PS2 Backwards compatibility).

Interesting, if it were true!

I think the mention of Yakuza appears to be nothing more than playing up to some fanboy fanaticism, which is the perfect bait & hook to concoct up a tale such as this.

Regardless, I can see that making plenty more PS2 available as downloadable content through PSN could work out quite easily for Sony; something Microsoft didn't quite get the hang of with Live, which I always thought was a bit of a bummer.

Anyway, at the end of it all, I guess we'll see?

I'd love to see Dreamcast releases over both XBLA and PSN, but they'd need to be on the level of Rez HD to get my interest. If it was just emulation (like the PS1 titles on PSN) then I'd stick to the real thing, but a spruced up Jet Set Radio with remastered sound would incite at least a moderate amount of mania I reckon. Or Powerstone 2 with online play... dear lord!

Wouldn't mind being able to use my PS3 arcade sticks to play Power Stone and most importantly, PROJECT JUSTICE.

I haven't used my ps3 to play many ps2 games. It would be great to get some re-releases of the classics.

I am looking forward to the GoW HD remakes

Dreamcast Shmups on PSN redone in HD would be too awesome. Being able to play them, unlike 99% of 360 Jap only shooters, would be even better. I still go to the trouble of dusting off the Dream Machine just to play Giga Wing 1 and 2. Make it happen, Sony. Give the western market what M$ wont.
