Sony confirm Tokyo press conference

PS3 News | Possible pre-E3 PS3 proclamations?
After the rumours of a few days ago regarding possible PS3 announcements, Sony has today declared that a specially convened press conference will be taking place in Tokyo today (or tomorrow if you're reading this in Europe - 15 March, in other words).

Precisely what is going to be announced at the conference is unclear, but it's not overly optimistic to expect the PlayStation 3 to get a mention, especially after months of Sony staying silent whenever questions were raised regarding its next-gen platform. There may even be a hint or two about another recent rumour, concerning a follow-up to the PSP. What we do know is that Sony will be wheeling out SCE president Ken Kutaragi, so something big may just be on the cards.

The conference, which is open to both media and analysts, is set to take place at 3pm local time, which by our reckoning translates to anything between 2pm - 5pm if you're in Australia, and a positively unholy 6am if you're in the UK, like Muggins here.

More on this the moment we hear it from Tokyo.

One announcement will be that the PS3 has been delayed, just as expected.

A November 2006 launch (they didn't mention weather that was for Japan or North America, but it's a safe bet that it's Japan) For all you Sony fanboys who blindly believed the Sony line that everything was on schedule, perhaps this should serve as a wakeup call to you to remember that Sony (or Microsoft or whoever else) don't care about you, and if need be, will lie to you to keep you from purchasing a competing product.

Fanboyism is stupidity.

All of the above companies will lie to you about everything they can, its just when they need to; should you remain loyal to them?

All I can say is, Sony better reveal something today.

hateboyism?

Anyway, I don't think they'll name the PS3 pricetag. I think it's still a bit early for that. At best I'd expect them to give a broad price range (e.g. US$400-US$650) But who knows?, it could happen I guess.

^ i don't think they'll announce a price-range yet, at least if the rumours of the delay are true (i'm assuming they are, i'd heard that reason from several sources). i might be wrong, but imo, it would probably be bad business practice to do so.

and yes, Hateboyism. like fanboyism, but instead of constantly spouting the virtues of one thing over other similar products, it relies on denigrating a product. i honestly don't see why Sony is so hated amongst gamers. they make games, like Nintendo and MS, they've made some good products, like Nintendo and MS, and they've made some bad products, like Nintendo and MS.

i suppose this will be dismissed as a Sony Fanboy rant too.

Obsolete, do you really think my rant was born of 'hateboyism'?
Let's face reality; these are big companies with an agenda - namely to sell product to you and attempt to prevent you from buying competitors products.

I think the gaming community could do with a dose of reality. People should understand how marketing works, how large organisations manage media and market expectations and so on. Call it 'hateboyism' if you want. I call it reality.

I enjoy some of the games these guys produce. I just think we all need to take what they say with a grain of salt and see through the wordy crap they present us with.

Yeah but you seem to have a bias specifically towards sony fanboys, and obs is right, all the companies all work in a similiar fashion and regardless of there different images they are trying to portray towards the public, at the end of the day they all look at the bottom line.

that isn't what i was calling Hateboyism, and i agree, and to a degree, that is how any company (gaming or otherwise) operates.

what i was referring to was taking this rumour (and yes, it is only rumour at present, however reliable the source may appear, until it comes from Johnny Sony's mouth, it is still only rumour) and turning it into "Sony Doesn't Care About You" when in reality, Sony DOES care about us, not on a personal level, but like you say, they are in the business of making money, and what makes them that money? us. news like a delay is only to the detrement of that endgoal, and just as i'm sure MS regretted having to delay the X360 release in Australia, Sony will regret having to delay the PS3, regret not getting money sooner, and regret potentially losing sales as people either buy a rival product, or lose interest by the time the delay is passed.

lets not forget that Nintendo and Microsoft are also in the business of making money, don't be fooled into thinking that the XBox 360 or NRev are being developed solely for the purpose of making products to enjoy, both are calculated risks in a payoff, a risk based on seemingly different policies, but risks nonetheless.

perhaps i unfairly labelled you a Sony Hateboy simply because the thread was to do about Sony in the first case, likewise i suppose i'm coming across as a Sony Fanboy (which may or may not be true, i definately have more interest in the unique games on the PS2 than i do of the games unique to the XBox or NGC, but if anything, i'd buy games on the PC before any console).

perhaps it's the overwhelming and unquestioning love people have for Nintendo here that's got me down of late. everyone rants about the X360 delay, and the PS3 delay, but lets not forget that for all intents and purposes, Nintendo has all but abandoned Aussie players for most of this generation now, where's the hate? again, choice borne by profits.

Interesting point. I think you're right about Nintendo - they haven't copped any flack, but then again they haven't made many promises so they haven't broken many promises.

I think the next year or so will be very telling for Nintendo. Their ex-CEO has made some very, very, VERY crazy comments in the past, like saying it's wrong to want technological improvement, better graphics and online games (!?). He seems so extremely out of touch with reality that it's frightening he was the CEO of a video games company until very recently. I think he resigned in 2004?

Anyway, I think Microsoft (despite their faults), has been smart in just getting something to market ahead of everyone else. Look at how much angst is building up with all these possible Sony/Nintendo delays, hidden details, and silence from the manufacturers. Surely sooner or later this will work to M$'s favour.

i think the smart thing MS did was not to try over-stretch themselves like Sony seem to be doing.

but it was still a gamble since we don't really need a new generation now, and by not making the X360 completely and safely backwards compatible, it could annoy many gamers who've only just shelled out for an XBox only 18 months ago.

that's not to say the PS2 was completely backwards compatible, or that the PS3 will be either, but the shelf-life of those consoles made up for it imo.

^ I'm not sure about MS gaining the advantage by releasing 360 earlier. Sure, they have a headstart, but lets be honest: The launch was somewhat rushed in America, and there are massive shortages(The aus release should be okay though, Oblivion saves souls). It's not that I hate 360 or anything, but I just think they could've waited out a bit longer, especially seeing that Ps3 and Rev won't be out for quite some time. However I CAN agree that it was a relatively smart move to have their product in first. People are impatient in this world, so some may not be able to wait for a ps3 or rev. icon_razz.gif
