Resistance: Fall of Man Preview

PS3 Preview | The flagship title for the PlayStation 3?
There has been a lot of complaints regarding the PlayStation 3's price point but if Sony has some big titles there for the launch, a lot of those complaints are likely to go away. One of the PlayStation 3 launch titles getting the most attention is Resistance: Fall of Man which is developed by the team at Insomniac (who are behind the brilliant Ratchet and Clank titles). Insomniac has been rather tight-lipped about Resistance, so we've gathered up everything we know about the game so far.

Resistance is set in Europe in the 1950s. The world has been overrun by an alien race only known as the Chimera, a species with an unknown origin that grow by turning other humans into Chimera. The situation is so dire that the US and Britain have linked up to save Europe and Asia from the Chimera. Players will assume the role of Nathan Hale, and your job will be to basically destroy each and every Chimera before humankind is eliminated.

Impressive visuals should be the order of the day.

Resistance is a first person shooter and from what we've seen, the action is going to be continuously frantic. In the E3 demo the dreary levels contained smoke effects and destructable glass, explosions were rampant and even whilst all this was happening the frame rate seemed to have no problem keeping up. The one complaint we'd have is that the AI didn't always look very inteligent, although at that stage, the game still had six months of development left so there is plenty of time for this to be improved.

The standard FPS weapons will all be making an appearance, such as the shotgun which should come in rather handy for eliminating those alien scum. It appears that the Chimera will also have some awesome weapons which should be rather enjoyable. We're hoping Insomniac don't hold back on the weapon count because Ratchet and Clank had some awesome weaponry. Grenades and rocket launchers should also be in the game, for those who like to create large explosions.

Insomniac love online play and the online play in Resistance appears to be all about large scale battles. Online play will support up to forty players, which is just remarkable although it's unknown whether voice chat will be supported for the online play. Information on the online modes is scarce although standard deathmatch and team vs team play should make it into the final game. Offline there is split screen multiplayer as well as co-op support for those who want to eliminate the Chimera with a mate.

We're not going to make huge calls about Resistance being the PlayStation's Halo killer or anything but it's clear that come the launch of the PlayStation 3 in November, Resistance: Fall of Man is going to be a huge title for the PlayStation 3. The game has been in development since before E3 2005 and everytime we see footage of the game it seems to be getting better, Insomniac have a great track record as well so we're confident that if anyone can push the PlayStation 3; it's them. We'll have more information on Resistance: Fall of Man as soon as it becomes available.
Overall:
Resistance: Fall of Man should be the flagship title for the PlayStation 3 once it launches, we're just hoping the game plays as good as it looks.

Pretty sure you'll be able to play as the Chimera, considering some of the weapons they have are rather appealing.

Interesting, so long as it actually offers something new to the genre then I'm excited, if it just involves running around killing anything that isn't human with the same old guns from every other game then I think I'll pass.

(Yay for run-on sentences!)

So I wonder if the whole area has to be eradicated of the vermin before you can move on or if you leave a few behind they breed, and you have to go back and retake the area?
And with the effect on the war as a whole at the end depending on how you go sounds interesting also.
Oh looks stunning too. icon_drool.gif
