Resistance is set in Europe in the 1950s. The world has been overrun by an alien race only known as the Chimera, a species with an unknown origin that grow by turning other humans into Chimera. The situation is so dire that the US and Britain have linked up to save Europe and Asia from the Chimera. Players will assume the role of Nathan Hale, and your job will be to basically destroy each and every Chimera before humankind is eliminated.
Resistance is a first person shooter and from what we've seen, the action is going to be continuously frantic. In the E3 demo the dreary levels contained smoke effects and destructable glass, explosions were rampant and even whilst all this was happening the frame rate seemed to have no problem keeping up. The one complaint we'd have is that the AI didn't always look very inteligent, although at that stage, the game still had six months of development left so there is plenty of time for this to be improved.
The standard FPS weapons will all be making an appearance, such as the shotgun which should come in rather handy for eliminating those alien scum. It appears that the Chimera will also have some awesome weapons which should be rather enjoyable. We're hoping Insomniac don't hold back on the weapon count because Ratchet and Clank had some awesome weaponry. Grenades and rocket launchers should also be in the game, for those who like to create large explosions.
Insomniac love online play and the online play in Resistance appears to be all about large scale battles. Online play will support up to forty players, which is just remarkable although it's unknown whether voice chat will be supported for the online play. Information on the online modes is scarce although standard deathmatch and team vs team play should make it into the final game. Offline there is split screen multiplayer as well as co-op support for those who want to eliminate the Chimera with a mate.
We're not going to make huge calls about Resistance being the PlayStation's Halo killer or anything but it's clear that come the launch of the PlayStation 3 in November, Resistance: Fall of Man is going to be a huge title for the PlayStation 3. The game has been in development since before E3 2005 and everytime we see footage of the game it seems to be getting better, Insomniac have a great track record as well so we're confident that if anyone can push the PlayStation 3; it's them. We'll have more information on Resistance: Fall of Man as soon as it becomes available.
