PlayStation 3 downloadable content revealed

PS3 News | Tekken 2, Resident Evil and Ridge Racer 7 demo available from day one.
Despite the fact that PAL gamers have to wait until March (at least) for their PlayStation 3 fix, the console is only a few weeks away from release in Japan and information is starting to filter through on the PlayStation 3's downloadable service.

The official Sony Japan website has revealed some of the games that will be downloadable on the PlayStation 3 network.

PlayStation One games that can be downloaded and transferred to the PSP include:
  • Biohazard Director's Cut
  • Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol. 1
  • Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol. 2
  • Bishi Bashi Special
  • Arc The Lad
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Everybody's Golf 2
  • Silent Bomber
  • Tekken 2
  • Mr. Driller
Demos that will be available to download from day one include:
  • Blast Factor
  • flOw
  • Lemmings 2
  • Kazuo
  • Puzzle
  • Mainichi Issho
  • Ridge Racer 7 Demo
The official website also states that 10 PlayStation One games will be released every month, which means we should have a full collection by, uh, 2050. To accompany this announcement we even have an image, which can be found in the Media Panel. We'll report back as more PlayStation 3 news becomes available.

No ps2 downloadables? I assume the psp will be bigger than those.

Do you have to play them on the PSP?

Have they all been changed to adapt to the PSPs lack of extra analog stick?

If you can play it straight on the PS3, will you have the ability to use the extra analog stick or will it be completely removed for the PSP functionality?

I'm not 100% with all of those games, but it looks like none of those titles require double analog sticks (or any at all).

I imagine that they'll stick to older games/ones that don't *need* twin sticks for the time being. Going back and altering all those later games that were designed around twin-sticks just for the PSP would be a mammoth task and I just don't see it happening. ]
Although I reckon some of the more popular ones might get re-worked.

They are all crap games that have had 'updates'. I mean why play Tekken 2 on the psp when a near ps2 quality version.

I think you HAVE to play them on the PSP for now, which is extraordinarily annoying, the page says they will add the ability to play them on the PlayStation 3 "later"

I love Sony. Time for good things now.
Well, having Tekken 2 will be cheaper than buying the Tekken available on PSP now. So yer... Thats better right?
Games will cost 5-10 US dollars.

I'm agreeing with Luke about having to play them only on the PSP at the moment as it would've been nice to have them available on the PS3 to begin with. Also I couldn't find mention of the use of a PC to transfer the games, so you'd need to spend $1400 to play downloaded PS1 games?

I think it's more a case of 'If you're already spent ~$1400 on certain gaming machines then you can play downloadable PS1 games'...
There are much cheaper and easier ways to play PS1 games than going that route - it certainly isn't the only option.

Yay, they have Jumping flash, I've got it on my Ps1 still but, it's still good... If they bring that back to Ps3 I will be so happy....

Why would you want to play the original Resident Evil at home on the PS3 anyway, when you can play Resident Evil 5?

Having the original on the PSP makes it a (presumably) cheaper alternative to the DS version, which I personally don't think is worth the $60 I've seen it on sale for.

PS1 titles make more sense as portable games. But yes, being able to play on the PS3 is necessary for those poor PSP-less souls, and that functionality will be there once there's enough of a library to make it worthwhile for the consumer. Maybe even by the time the system comes out here, who knows?

Either way, I think it's great that these games are getting the digital treatment, otherwise the remaining original copies of gems like Vagrant Story and Silent Hilll would end up scratched and scuffed beyond repair, and the few working copies fetching hundreds of dollars on eBay.

Crap range of titles.

Oh well it seems like Nintendo Sony don't know what they are doing in regards to downloads.

They are probably still trying to work how much they can make from old games without doing anything.

Sony will argue after 3 months there have been 1,000,000 downloads but hey imagine how many there would be if they put up some decent titles and they were playable on the PS3?

I've got Jumping Flash 2 and was wondering if it is worth tracking down the first?

Bugger the Sony downloads they are a complete ripoff. I'd rather rip off the complete Phony downloads to bugger Sony - Ummm did I get that right? icon_confused.gif

Anyhoo... bring on the mod download community - PS3 with games made for love not dollars! I'd personally pay extra for that! I'll have a shot at whipping Sony up a home brew death match game called revenge of Lik-Sang 2. Great scene when Philly-boy & Kaz both get decapitated in the hot tub together. icon_lol.gif

Sorry just gibbering...

Well you could always go to homebrew route, there's already a ps1 emulator for psp, as well as others.

Wow, I actually think this is kinda cool. While the 360 arcade games are cool they havent really realeased any newer ports of games that came out around the PS1 era or later. But yeah only being able to play them on the PSP kinda sucks.. Hopefully they will get them working on the console itself by the time it hits our shores..

I prefer the developers getting my support from games, thanks.

It's a matter of when, seeing as they aren't having it available to do so yet.
