For those not in the know, GTA IV is scheduled to appear in October 2007 on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Of course, it wasn't always like this - previously, GTA titles had hit Sony platforms first, before emigrating to Microsoft formats at a later date. Thus, when Microsoft announced at E3 2006 that the next game in Rockstar's expansive, free-roaming franchise would be released at the same time on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it was considered as something of a coup for the Redmond giant; the impression was that Microsoft had poached exclusivity of the series from Sony.
However, it now appears that Sony may have let an opportunity slip through its fingers. When asked about the loss of GTA IV as a PS3 exclusive in a recent Newsweek piece, SCEA Jack Tretton seemed to suggest that Sony had in fact baulked at the price that publisher Take-Two was asking in return for GTA IV to remain exclusive to the PlayStation 3. "It's just a question of how deep into your pockets do you have to reach to secure [exclusivity]?" said Tretton. "Desperation breeds deep pockets. Confidence breeds the opposite. When it makes sense, you do the deal. When it doesn't, you pass."
So there you go. Here's hoping Sony hasn't committed a bit of a "Dick Rowe" eh?
