flOw gets dated for PS3

PS3 News | Sony signs up students behind game.
The PlayStation 3-bound flOw will be released on December 19, it's been revealed. Developed by indie start-up thatgamecompany, the abstract-looking title started life as thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen's thesis research. It made an eye-catching appearance at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, and will be made downloadable for US and Japanese PS3 owners, via the PlayStation 3's online store.

flOw, which runs at full 1080p, is a game about piloting an aquatic organism through a surreal biosphere where players consume other organisms, evolve, and advance their organisms into the abyss. It's drawn comparisons to a number of titles, from Geometry Wars to Snake, and is described by a thatgamecompany press release as "soothing and seductive."

Indeed, it certainly seduced Sony Computer Entertainment America, which has struck a deal with thatgamecompany to produce three further titles. We eagerly anticipate what the former University of Southern California (USC) students come up with next. If you want to try out flOw now, you can grab the PC version for free on the thatgamecompany website.

A strange, yet rather nice to look at game. I'm not sure what Sony are thinking though.

I imagine they're thinking something along the lines of "We need to release good games to push our online distribution model." icon_neutral.gif

I'd love to see flOw running in high-def, the PC version is pretty funky.

Yes. It's awesome. Pity there is only 2 levels though, too easy.

Man I love these new innovative games. Reminds me of a game back on the PSOne that was on one of the demo discs where you were a stingray floating through the ocean.

Isn't 'Flow' the same premise for the beginning of the PC game spore?

Yeah, actually. Now that you mention it they do seem rather similar.

I don't quite get this game. THere seems to be no real game in there. I keep playing it to try find what I missed, but.. nothing.

Swim around. Eat stuff. Go down next level. Repeat around 10 times. Then nothing. Once you have eaten everything and reached the lowest level, what happens then? There is no where to go, nothing to do, nothing left to eat. Its like all over in less than 20 minutes. What am I missing?

Having said that. I keep going back to it. I have played this game more often this year than any other game on my PC. I just love the ambiance. The look. The Feel. But I just cant help but think there should be more there that I am not seeing..
