PlayStation 3 firmware upgrade 1.81 out now

PS3 News | A minor update.
It's been revealed on the PlayStation Blog that the PlayStation 3 1.81 firmware upgrade will be avaliable tomorrow.

The upgrade is only minor and will fix a few issues that were identified when the 1.80 firmware was released. Eric Lempel the Director for PlayStation Network Operations has stated that the most notable improvement is the RGB full setting. If you're connecting your PlayStation 3 to your TV through a HDMI cable and if your TV supports RGB full range, then the picture quality should be improved. Lempel also states that Sony is "continually evaluating and improving PS2 software compatibility too" so hopefully this means more PlayStation 2 titles will become backwards compatible.

UPDATE: The firmware update is available now and can be downloaded via the PlayStation 3.

I'm assuming this means that the RGB full setting won't turn itself off after restarting your console and playing some games, even though it says it is still turned on.

I'm guessing that's what it means. Which makes this update a Godsend, because whilst the Full RGB mode is gorgeous (what I thought of as black was actually dark grey by comparison), it's a hassle having to go into the Display settings, switch it off, then back on every time you power up the system.

Argh! They even said they'd be addressing further BC in this update, but Jak 1 still doesn't work!

Why Sony, why relegate one of your best PS2 games to the scrap heap?

It's not the main patch...it's a quick fix for HDMI users.

full makes everything a shade darker for me. does it only affect ps2 games or do ps3 games look better in full rgb as well?

Is there an option for RGB or is it just automatically set?

You have to manually set it. It's in the Display Settings area. Change the RGB output option to Full and it's noticeably more vibrant. IMO it's a pretty major change for the best.
