Gran Turismo 5 won't feature car damage

PS3 News | Could slip to late 2008 as well.
If you're a Gran Turismo fan then it's been a disappointing few years. First details on Gran Turismo 5 were released back in 2005. Late last year Gran Turismo HD was released on the PlayStation Store, with a few minimalist options.

Now, Gran Turismo director Kaunori Yamauchi has revealed whilst speaking to US based magazine 'Car and Drive' that the earliest that Gran Turismo 5 would be released would be Spring 2008. Yamauchi has also revealed that the date could be pushed back to the end of the year if the team needs more time.

What takes so long when it comes to Gran Turismo? Well according to Yamauchi it's taking 180 days for someone to build a car in the levels of detail required for Gran Turismo 5 in comparison to 30 days for Gran Turismo 3 and one day for the original title. Disappointingly it's also been revealed that crash damage for the game will not be in the title because some companies don't want to see their beloved vehicles smashed up.

Yamauchi hasn't ruled out adding crash damage as downloadable content, and we'd predict if this happens it will probably be in late 2059 / early 2060.

Well that sux, seeing as Forza 2 has Ferraris and stuff with damage models the only thing I can think of is that they didn't have enough money to support this feature.

INFERIOR!

Well its not much of a suprise. I dont think they ever wanted to include damage. Im kinda over this game anyway. I prefer games like NFS, Midnight Club and Burnout

Well that rules me out for Gran Turismo 5, no damage and I hate the license system. I guess thats because I suck at teh licenses icon_lol.gif

If they included damage I would be interested, guess that's where forza 2 has the upper edge.

^It seems to be a growing trend. 360 having a upper hand over the PS3.

i wish they'd name names regarding who won't sign off on vehicle damage.

it's really getting a bit beyond a joke, i mean i know that damage is really a secondary thing in car games like this, i mean you aren't supposed to crash in Forza either, but it's just that little bit extra in the game.

i guess there's never going to be any doubt that i will get this game, but it doesn't make the disappointment any easier to bear.

never liked then because they had no damage and looks like i never will

Wait, DOWNLOADABLE DAMAGE PACKS?

*adds to reasons to why I hate Online Game Console Stores*

^ yeah i was wondering about that too.

does that therefore mean that the code would have to be written into the game to allow such extension later on?
i can't see this sort of ability being made a patch anyway.

just another reason why i think PD should name names.

Oh well I'm not too suss about damage I would've liked it, but knowing how I drive if it was realistic damage my car would be totalled on the first crash icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif Looking forward to GT5 =) They should take as much time as they need to perfect it icon_cool.gif

This is so ridiculous. As frivolous as a thing as car damage is, it is a HUGE thing when it comes to comparing itself to other titles.
Like what has already been said here, Forza has frign damage and they use real cars also.

Having this game without damage almost defeats the purpose of having it being made to look so good. I am sure most people will agree that one of the biggest reasons people watch car racing (and subsequently, play car games) is to see awesome crashes.

I have a feeling GT5 will not do as well as they hope.

That's lame.Gran Turisimo to feature auto-pilot for all cars that can't be turned off, because a certain car manufacturer doesn't want you to drive their car the way it wasn't intended.

The no crash damage thing takes a huge slice out of the realism pie for me.
Forza has had damage in both games, PGR has cosmetic damage and NFS has a small amount of cosmetic damage so you can't tell me that the manufactures said no to it, it seems to me that they're just avoiding evolving their game and instead just want to make it look pretty.

Really Forza 1 had damage? Wow I didn't know that! Well it seems Gran Turismo has been inferior for a while now.

I never liked Gran Turismo....way too sim like and now without proper damage modelling (when other games are incorporating it)....well they can't really call themselves 'the real driving simulator' cuz honestly that title belongs to Forza. Looking after damage and wear and tear on your car would be a huge part of racing.

I really think Polyphony Digital should strive for this....i mean just look at the outcry and comparisons within minutes of this thread appearing.

NEXT GEN AM FAILED!

Seriously, for games like these, you need something like damaging and being next gen and all you would think they would consider it. Hell N64 driving games had decent damage models.

People have been badgering them for car damage ever since GT1 came out, and they're never going to do it. Apart from refining the handling and throwing more cars in they really can't make anything more than GT4.5 if they don't include damage.

I call BS on Polyphony Digital reason for the lack of damage. We've seen it can be done with games like Forza, Need for speed and others. I'm sure theres one in the work that'll even allow you to flip it's licenced cars.

I think the real reason is they know that by including damage the car modes will need to downgraded a little. Seems there going for eye candy over gameplay features, which doesn't really surprise me when it comes to the Grand Turismo series

Really disappointing, they'll really need to throw a lot more cars, online play, heaps of tracks, in car views, custom paint(!), and mind-boggling graphics at it to make it more appealing than Forza 2 now.

In GTHD, I found the most unappealing visual feature was that the terrain on the track only extended a short distance, before being replaced by the mountains on the skydome. On the lower half of the track this was so obvious that it looked hideous. Hopefully the modelled terrain will extend further in GT5, and the skydome will only be used for sky.

Pfft, Polyphony don't have time to worry about adding features that affect the gameplay, people! They have much more pressing matters, like taking 180 days to model an obscure Japanese car that nobody will ever drive.

Personally, I'd substitute "Obscure Japanese Car" with "Ford Falcon". icon_razz.gif

How hard is it to get damage, even PGR 3 has slight cosmetic damage.

I'd assume if they were to include damage they would go all or nothing. Its a Sim so its probably better to not include it then include an elementary version of it.

I think they excluded damage models because it will compromise how good the normal car models can look.

Not denying it won't look good, this is GT we're talking about. Its shame that didnt push the damage on the level of forza. Otherwise it would nice rivalry there.

Major mistake from the Gran Turismo team. As soon as they are really challenged in the car-simulation genre they pull some really vital punches. For me, car damage is really important and despite the fact this will probably be an awesome simulation experience, they are already starting behind the eight-ball.
