Disgaea 3 coming to PS3 in 2008

PS3 News | Visuals to die for?
Japanese-based developer Nippon Ichi has revealed the development for the third title in the classic strategy-RPG series, Disgaea.

The game will be debuting on the PS3 in Japan in 2008, and will cost 7,140 Yen, which hints that the title will be released at full retail price. Further details beyond release and price were not disclosed, though we’ve got two of the first screenshots in the Media Panel below – the developers indicate that the game is still in development, suggesting that the images shown will likely differ once released.

You can read our verdict on last year's insanely addictive Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories here, and we suggest picking up the first title too if you can manage to track it down.

if they can clean up the 2d aspect making it really crisp and cut out the purposely built in pixel crap it will be a great game, even for 2d.

I thought it would have been common sense to use hi-res sprites.

Awesome, really great announcement! I'm a big fan of the Disgaea series, I've been waiting to hear about something like this since Disgaea 2. Yet another game to add to my list of wanted PS3 games, I'm really loving that console right now. Excitement +10. icon_biggrin.gif

As for high-res sprites, it's true that they should make use of them, and they probably will, those shots are obviously quite early. Still, games like Disgaea aren't known for their graphics, but for their gameplay!

Then why not release it on the PS2? I'm sure the costs of development would be much cheaper. Either that, or the 'Nippon-Ichi cookie cutter' engine translated pretty well to the PS3 hardware.

But I digress, Disgaea is a pretty awesome game. Shame that so many of its kind are marred by subpar production values.

Agreed. The original Disgaea(s) hardly pushed the PS2 to its limit in any case, and these screenshots look pretty nigh on identical. 2D sprites on rotating 3D grid layouts have looked like a cop-out since the original PSX. I love that genre, and Disgaea in particular, but eventually you have to ask yourself if you're getting your money's worth.

Graphics don't make the game, but it's gonna take more than some pimped up spell sequences to give this game an excuse for being on the PS3.

Never played one, but hopefully they max it out before release sounds good.

Isometric = death to me.
C'mon it's the future of gaming, give me some swirling cameras if they have to be in that perspective.

I love Disgaea 2 (still working thru it). Although the 2D anime style is very cool, I reckon they could pull off something similar and classy fully in 3D, esp on the PS3.

Zarnoss: the camera is not fixed in Disgaea icon_smile.gif

This is great news, loved Disgaea but still yet to play Disgaea 2, might pick it up shortly.

hmmm being the type of game which doesn't require alot of graphics maybe this will be more of a PSN downloadable game? If so it would be a great addition but i'm not too sure if we'll get to see this in English area's too soon though?

For anyone interested - the article has been updated with better quality images. If you were seeking my opinion, I think it looks grand to tell you the truth.

The developer are an extremely small group (I think below a dozen people, which is a big difference from the usual 40-80), and it's great to see 2D isn't quite dead despite graphics holding so much importance this generation.

Nice one, Mark.

The shots do look cool. Looks like the sprites are just re-used from the previous games (would make sense if they don't have much dev time, considering how many sprites there must be for all those characters...) but they look somewhat blurry when constrasted with the crisp 3D. Oh well, still looks fun!

Well, they'd probably be charging the same amount to buy it if they were releasing t on PS2 anyway, so I think this can only be a good thing, why should we complain? And you are getting your money's worth, as has been said the graphics aren't everything, and when has a Disgaea game ever let us down gameplay wise? They should be able to integrate all sorts of great new features using the PS3's hardware and Blu-Ray's capacity.
