Australian PS Store to get music downloads

PS3 News | A world first.
On the PS Store, you can find PS3 demos and trailers, PSN games, PSOne-to-PSP games, movie trailers and an assortment of other gaming related media. On the Australian PS Store, you've got the same, only there's much less of it. However, the Australian store will tomorrow be receiving a worldwide exclusive.

At a Sony press event today, it was announced that the Sony games division in Australia and Sony BMG have come to an arrangement, where ten music videos will be provided for download from the PS Store, free of charge. While this is being billed as a trial, this is the first time that the PS Store will have content that is not specifically related to games.

We were not told exactly which music videos will be available, but we'll report back to you as soon as we find out, which should be quite soon.

Sounds like they're prepping for a full service of movies and a library of music. They'll obviously be looking at the download numbers of these free vids, and if they're high enough, they'll go ahead with their plans. I'm all for it, the more available on the PSN the better, I say. I'm not sure how many people would use it though, and Frozencry's post highlights one of the most important factors, which is the selection of music they have chosen. They'll have to have some pretty decent tracks to get those numbers.

More like 'Perpetual Black Second' ... because it feels like we're perpetually waiting for content on the Australian PSN...

Ok fine, I just wanted to name a Meshuggah song.

Eitherway, digital distribution of music (paid) can sod right the hell off. It baffles me that people are willing to pay so much for such transient, bad quality copies of tracks when they could just buy the friggin' CD and rip the tracks themselves for better quality and the ability to use it on as many devices as you want. **** paying for MP3s, and **** DRM too. /Rant

Also, when are they going to allow people to play music from their PS3 HDD (or connected device) while in games? I could understand the music shop if you could do that, but at the moment whats the incentive to buy it on the PSN store when you could just buy it on your PC (and then transfer/stream to your PS3 if you really wanted it there)?

I'm happy that they are providing new content and in this case, introducing something new. But can't help but feel that we are the guinea pigs in this case, while i'm not too concerned, having a PSN radio station dedicated to games and up to date news might be a good idea, and while some mentioned that playing music in the background while in games, it could be handy to have such a radio station streaming while in game as well.

not only do you enjoy the game, you get the latest news *concerning* playstation content.

Thats just what we need, Sony propaganda streaming live off the 'net and through our speakers while gaming. 'THE MORE YOU BUY, THE MORE WE LOVE YOU! GO! CONSUME! OBEY!"

Just... No.
