The bestselling PlayStation 3 first person shooter has been nominated for the 'PC World Gamer's Award', the only BAFTA voted for by the public. Other contenders for the award – compiled from the highest-selling video games on each system – include Gears of War, FIFA 07, Football Manager 2007, Wii Play, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Dr Kawashima's Brain Training.
Dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Rev Rogers Govender, expressed his anger over Resistance's nomination. "It's a disgrace that [the game] has been shortlisted [for a BAFTA]," he said.
A level in Resistance requires players to fend off mutant aliens during a standoff inside Manchester Cathedral. Sony later said that it had not approached the Church over using the Cathedral in the alternate-reality game. "BAFTA should not be seen condoning such behaviour unless they are saying it is acceptable for producers to walk into historic buildings and film interiors – ignoring contracts, rights and liability," Covender said.
Results of BAFTA voting will be known on October 23rd when the winners in all categories are announced at a ceremony in London.
