Resistance BAFTA nomination 'a disgrace'

PS3 News | Church of England takes aim – again.
Resistance: Fall of Man fell into hot water earlier this year following complaints from the Church of England that the game depicted violent scenes inside Manchester Cathedral without permission. According to the BBC News, the Church has experienced another falling out with Resistance, this time over it's shortlisting for a prestigious BAFTA award.

The bestselling PlayStation 3 first person shooter has been nominated for the 'PC World Gamer's Award', the only BAFTA voted for by the public. Other contenders for the award – compiled from the highest-selling video games on each system – include Gears of War, FIFA 07, Football Manager 2007, Wii Play, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Dr Kawashima's Brain Training.

Dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Rev Rogers Govender, expressed his anger over Resistance's nomination. "It's a disgrace that [the game] has been shortlisted [for a BAFTA]," he said.

A level in Resistance requires players to fend off mutant aliens during a standoff inside Manchester Cathedral. Sony later said that it had not approached the Church over using the Cathedral in the alternate-reality game. "BAFTA should not be seen condoning such behaviour unless they are saying it is acceptable for producers to walk into historic buildings and film interiors – ignoring contracts, rights and liability," Covender said.

Results of BAFTA voting will be known on October 23rd when the winners in all categories are announced at a ceremony in London.

Oh. I thought they were freaking out because Resistance actually got nominated. Who cares that their Church is in the game? Sony apologised, get over it.

Once I heard 'BAFTA' all I could think of was, "are you having a laugh? Is he having a laugh".

Completely unrelated but when I read this I was reminded of this post on Kotaku.

Kind of ironic that one church is worried so much about a virtual hypothesis and another is using it to draw in a crowd (as small as it may be once they turn off the XBox).

The second comment on the Kotaku post is spot on too.

I hate to be a party pooper, but the 'ormg yeah da priests are all pedofiles so shadap' jokes are extremely old, especially considering that's two times in one day now icon_shifty.gif

Anyhow, I think the church should be conversely campaigning against Wii Play's nomination.

If they want a battle of morals then let it be set. Lets not forget the crusades and the inquisitions these churches started and the millions of lives that have been ended or ruined due to them.
I think Sony has the moral high ground on any sort of church. (Buddists don't count since they worship in monestaries).

its not about morals - its about $$$ ("contracts" and "rights") not unlike another religious "outrage" news article posted here a couple of days ago. No wonder churches are resorting to frag fests to keep membership (see a 3rd recent article) - its clear that a motivation to attend to worship a God is a much lower priority.........................

You're right Emech, the church only cares about missing out on a cut of the R:FoM money pie. Cause like they don't already have enough money as it is.....

I think someone needs to call the Waaaaambulance and get the church a tissue.

Well the church had better pray that aliens don't come a lookin' for a rumble in that church, because none of us will lift a finger now.
"Oh the cruel irony" they'll say.
"We turned away the people who have been training for this exact event for years"
"Maybe we can get Tom Hanks, oh no The Davinci Code, we are doomed"

I think they all need to join the first church of Chuck Norris.
Let us all roundhouse, amen.

"Cars were invented so bad guys had a means of getting away from Chuck Norris faster"
i love that one.
