New PSP will have same battery life as current model

PSP News | Sony clarifies battery life of the new PSP 3000.
Late last week the internet was set ablaze with news that the new, brighter version of the PSP, set to be released October 16th, would have a shorter battery life than its current, duller, less responsive incarnation. This information stemmed from an interview between Gamespot and John Koller, Director of Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America. However today, on the official PlayStation blog, Koller has corrected the information that was given regarding the portable's battery life.

"The new PSP will have equivalent battery life to the current PSP, about 4 to 6 hours for games and about 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos," Koller wrote. He then went on to discuss how this was achieved stating, "while the enhanced screen of the new PSP draws a little more power, our engineers in Japan worked to reduce the power consumption of the overall system including its components, so you won’t have to worry about losing any time when enjoying the more vibrant visuals displayed with the new PSP."

Battery life crisis averted. Thanks, unnamed super engineers.

Still not really that long. 4 hours isn't much, but at least it isn't any shorter.

I usually get 6 hours out of my Slim, which I'm pretty happy with since the DS doesn't last much longer (at least mine don't).

i was getting 5-6 hours out of my psp fat, back when i played alot of gta, but since i dont play it much and dont charge it right im lucky to get a couple of hours anymore.

Yeah I'd be lucky to get 4.5 hours out of my PSP Slim, which is usually enough for anything I'd need it for in one sitting. My DS lite trumps it doing 10+ hours - I don't even know how long but it lasts me a weeks some times. My biggest battery gripe with the PSP is that even on standby it will die quite quickly, whereas the DS will go for a week without any issue.

I still get 5-6 hours + on my PSP 1000 and I have just changed my battery ...
Can't wait for a PSP with 2 analog sticks -

What the hell have you been doing to it?

My launch console gets played every week day for about an hour and it hasn't been recharged for 3 weeks and it still hasn't got the Red Light Indicator on it...

What have I been doing to it? Using them of course. My launch consoles have had much heavier use than that, an hour a day is nothing, mine often get 5-6 a day at times (such as when I was playing World Ends With You). icon_smile.gif

yeh my ds runs out often coz i play it CONSTANTLY pretty much overkilled my battery, its a good thing psp not getting reduced, if the thing is a portable it has to at least last a day for me =D

if they could tweak the battery life to compensate for the new screen, shows they could probably make the battery life even better if they tried.

I wouldn't mind a PSP as a bit of a change from my DS, but I know myself too well, it would sit around with a dead battery half the time. I already have enough trouble keeping my mobile and DS charged.

Wow thats actually quite impressive, considering how much brighter and clear the resolution is on the 3000.

It definitely is a big difference.

EDIT: Top is the Slim btw, so imagine the comparison between the original psp.
