Sony launches Australian PSP website

PSP News | Including a teaser of some of the launch titles.
Sony Computer Entertainment have today released their official PSP website, www.yourpsp.com.au, this is where gamers can go to claim their copy of Spider-man 2 on UMD when the handheld is released on September 1st, 2005.

At the moment the website is looking rather bland, but it does contain four titles which will be appearing on the PSP, their appearance on this website all but confirms they will launch alongside the handheld.

These games are Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure, Medievil Resurrection and Everybody's Golf. The website will be continually updated in the coming months, and brings the PSP's release that much closer.

How long do you reckon it will take for video store to start renting UMD movies ?

i'd seriously doubt there will be much demand for them...

The screen on the PSP demands movie watching .. you look at the size and how crystal clear the images are and you just want to watch everything you can get your hands on. So I am pretty sure alot of people are going to want to see movies on it.

It's not as suited to movie-watching as any kind of home widescreen TV. icon_razz.gif
Or dedicated portable DVD players that play DVDs, not UMDs.

How ugly and incovenient are portable DVD players .. I would rather watch a movie on a PSP any day compared to a portable DVD player. A portable DVD player is like taking a brick with you everywhere you go.

How expensive and fragile are PSPs .. I would rather watch a movie on a portable DVD player any day compared to a PSP. A PSP is like taking a sheet of glass with you everywhere you go.

Let's not turn this into a flame topic against the PSP. I have no real problem with the device itself; it's just that I have a major problem with buying movies which won't play on the best viewing environment (a widescreen TV) and have to be watched on a small portable device (UMD), as opposed to buying ones that will play on widescreen TVs and yet still can be watched on a portable device (DVD), even if it's not such a small one.

Well, I'm geussing Sony will have UMD exclusives just to spice things up. Like exclusive game to movie movies like FF or MGS. icon_wink.gif That would be nice, no?

I wanna watch Futurama on my PSP.

The site hasn't change from the "annoucement date" at all from what I can see. Still totally bare bones and that big ugly price tag hasn't gone away. From E3, I'm not sure the PSP is really worth buying even in September, the upcoming DS games are totally smoking it...

Video Rental stores won't start stocking UMDs until the PSP market can be considered profitable, and unless the PSP starts selling like hotcakes on release and becomes the next 'Ipod', I don't see it happening in Australia.

The Australian market for demand on video rentals are rather limited as it is, and I wouldn't consider UMDs being more popular than D.V.Ds.

So in all honestly I don't see any renting of UMDs being made at video rental stores. Maybe at your game specific stores, but not video rentals. It's similar to Game Boy games - not big enough in Australia. Whereas in America both of these have hit off as far as I know.

It will probably take a while for the PSP to really hit it off down here, even then it'll make more sense that mostly blockbuster movies will be ported to UMD's, which limits choice. Then there's the fact that most poeple will use the PSP mainly as time fillers and not everyone will sit around to watch a 1 and half/2 hour movie too often. That kind of viewing would suit vacations, long car rides and the sort.

Then again if you're a movie buff you can always convert the movie to mpeg 4 and dump it on a big enough memory stick in a very complicated and time consuming process.

Personally I'm hoping that Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children make it to UMD down here icon_biggrin.gif

I'm not happy about the price either, if there were some really great games coming out at launch it would justify me buying one then, but making us pay around AU$100 more than the US is ridiculous icon_mad.gif
