Colin McRae Rally 2005 Preview

PSP Preview | Colin McRae makes his PSP debut.
The first rally game to debut on the PSP will be sitting right beside the unit itself on September 1st, and conveniently enough, it's the latest entry in (arguably) the greatest rally franchise of all time, Colin McRae Rally 2005 Plus.

Rally games are huge in PAL regions, but not quite as large overseas, and like the entire CMR series, this game will debut before it sees a release in American regions. The rally genre has been flooded recently, with a plethora of decent titles for those who love to fly around slippery routes that supposedly consitute tracks. Rallisport Challenge 2 & WRC are both brilliant rally titles, and we're especially surprised Sony would be beaten to the punch, with CMR launching before WRC on the PSP.

Unfortunately the game won't be an entirely new Colin McRae game, but rather a port of the PlayStation 2 version released last year. However, the game will include wireless multiplayer, which kind of makes up the lack of original content.

So, what can we expect from the game? Well, the title boasts a selection of over thirty cars for starters, including the Volkswagen Golf, Celica, Alfa Romeo and of course the Subaru Impreza. The game takes players through many official rally locations, including Australia, Germany and Finland.

The damage model is simply the best seen in a rally game to date. When players crash into an object, the screen will blur a little, with doors flying off and windows smashing. And rather than take an arcadey approach, CMR is very much based on simulation. Those looking for an arcade rally game may be best off waiting, as the handling is true to a rally car (or so we think it is), and the damage is simply unforgiving.

The heart of the game lies with the Career Challenge mode. This mode takes players through a lengthy rally career, where they start from the very bottom and try to work to the top.

One of the downfalls of the PlayStation 2 version of the game was the loading - it was simply excessive, clocking in at over 20 seconds a segment. We're hopeful that the PSP version actually lowers the time it takes for the game to load, as the portability of the game will be questionable if it takes five minutes to actually get into the game.

Colin McRae Rally 2005 will be available for the PSP on September 1st, and we'll have more on the title leading up to it's release.
Overall:
Ports don't exactly excite us, but rally games do, so we're looking forward to flying around the track in our Impreza.
