Racing games so far are prevalent and puzzle and action games are emerging on the PSP. Though there is one area that the launch of the PSP that has seemed a little lacking. And that would be RPG’s. What makes this surprising is that RPG’s have been a cornerstone of success for Sony’s previous two machines. Sure, Japan has been receiving some lovin’ but we want our share too! Even though the prominent Japanese developers are missing the PAL party on September 1st, we at least have one RPG to look at, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade.
First off, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade is an in-house development from the makers of titles like Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms for the PS2. Second, it has not only been inspired by these games but by other console hack-and-slashers such as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.
The story hardly looks to be driven in any ambitious manner. It revolves around your character being the champion of the crown. As a champion, you are sworn to protect the leader of a mystical village. Read: you crawl through dungeons and mire in order to destroy all forms of nefarious creatures that may be trying to unsettle peace in the kingdom.
While the basic premise looks to be nothing more than an excuse to drive you into dungeons, the main focus in the game would obviously be the hack and slash action. We are reliably informed that there will be plenty of dungeons for you to hack your way through. To add to that, they’ll be randomly generated parts of the environment and plenty of monsters and bosses to hack through. Another portion of the will be the mandatory collection phase. There will be lots of items and artifacts to collect that you can use to customise your characters with.
Keeping to Western RPG tradition, you’ll be able to choose from 4 classes of characters and have plenty of customisation options open to you. The classes are: Knight, Alchemist, Druid and Beserker, each with they’re imminent unique fighting abilities as well as their own pros and cons. Players generally pick them off personal preference.
The game also includes wireless multiplayer that will allow you to hack through dungeons with a friend, assuming they own a copy of the game as well. Though you shouldn’t be expecting to see the gameplay experience change too much.
Unfortunately, the game looks to be hitting two major hurdles. The first is that it really isn’t doing anything to grab anyone’s attention. It does nothing to differentiate itself from any other RPG ever made apart from the fact that it’s on the PSP. The second is that it doesn’t look to jump to technical hurdle from console to handheld. Load times are reported to be painful and a console-derived game has never proven to successful on a portable.
As an RPG, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade looks ordinary in most aspects. People who like this sort of game may find something to like about it but otherwise, most may find it difficult to get past the watered-down feel. It looks like we may be waiting for a while for our PSP RPG salvation.

Untold Legends Preview
PSP Preview | The first of hopefully many, a PSP RPG.
Overall:
Apart from being the first proper RPG for the PSP, this title doesn't have much else going for it.
