First announced back in October last year, the title was a ‘special edition’ of the original Tomb Raider similar to what was released for the PSone and PC back in 1996. Although being surprisingly quiet about its development, many speculated that the title was unofficially cancelled. However, last week a trailer surfaced (which can be found at the following link thanks to GameVideos.com) on YouTube that clearly appeared to be a remake of the original Tomb Raider title, with a Core Design logo stamped beside it, which rekindled many people’s hopes.
Speaking out today about the cancellation and leaked video, Core Design had this to say about the situation; "The video of Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition that appeared on certain sites was an unauthorised release of an internal presentation of a game that was being developed by Core Design until very recently. It was running on PSP and used a Core-developed engine. However, following a recent review this project has been officially cancelled by SCi."
From what we’ve been told, the remake had been in development for well over nine months and was apparently 80% complete, with several new inclusions such as an increased difficultly level. It is expected that the decision to cancel the game was due to a recent agreement from SCi Entertainment to sell off the staff and physical assets of Core Design to Rebellion.
However, various sources have suggested that Crystal Dynamics will continue the project, as well as a remake of Tomb Raider II with original Lara Croft guru Toby Gard leading the projects.
