PSP Firmware 2.80 released

PSP News | Demo of Mercury Meltdown with that, sir?
Sony Japan has just released version 2.80 of the firmware for the PlayStation Portable. This latest update fixes a few security exploits, and also includes the ability to download video under the RSS channel. It's now also possible to register devices via a wireless LAN access point and play AAC files with the file extension .3gp. But possibly the best news about this new update is the nifty Mercury Meltdown demo that's been launched alongside it. Now, the game can be downloaded here, while the firmware itself is currently available here. Alternatively, you can use your PSP to connect wirelessly and download the firmware update.

We'll have our impressions of Mercury Meltdown shortly, but it's certainly worth downloading the firmware just to experience what's looking like a promising game.

I like this policy of releasing demos to encorage upgrades. Bring it on I say.

While I like the new graphic style, I would have liked to see some more new features to the gameplay. Demo is mildly disapointing.

This is what i like about the PSP and its operability.
The ability to download updates/games/demos and
play/share the demos anytime I want to.

No restriction at all unlike the DS.

The PSP will eventually be overall winner with longer
lifespan than the DS.

This doesn't mean the DS is no good, but
there are limitations and not as verstile as the PSP.

But the PSP takes too much battery life, even when turned off.

Even when turned off? Eh? DS uses the battery when in "hibernation" but the PSP doesn't use anything.

I can highly recomend getting the upgraded size for your PSP battery. Sony sent us one for E3 and it's been great. Really makes a difference - it lasts me a good 2-3 days now.

Oops icon_redface.gif I meant that the battery loses energy while turned off.

Yeah, all Li-Ion Batteries do. However they're possibly the best cell type around, no memory and they can last indefinately if treated right.

No touch screens, or two screens for that matter, or microphone are restrictions.
