Sega Genesis Collection in the works

PSP News | That would be a Mega Drive collection for us, then.
Got a hankering for Golden Axe? Or maybe you want Altered Beast to rise from its grave? You're in luck! Sega America has just announced Sega Genesis Collection, a compilation of over 30 Genesis/Mega Drive games for the PS2 and PSP. It's certainly looking to be a healthy line-up, with Altered Beast, Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi III, Golden Axe and Phantasy Star all confirmed to be on the compilation.

While Sega itself has yet to reveal all the games on offer, 1Up.com have listed the games they claim will be included in the collection. Keep in mind these are yet to be confirmed by Sega themselves.
  • Alex Kidd: The Enchanted Castle
  • Altered Beast
  • Bonanza Bros
  • Columns
  • Comix Zone
  • Decap Attack
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Ecco: The Tides of Time
  • Ecco Jr.
  • Eternal Champions
  • Flicky
  • Gain Ground
  • Golden Axe
  • Golden Axe II
  • Golden Axe III
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Phantasy Star III
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Ristar
  • Shadow Dancer: Secret of Shinobi
  • Shinobi III
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Super Thunderblade
  • Sword of Vermillion
  • Tac/Scan (Unlockable in the PS2 version only)
  • Vectorman
  • Vectorman 2
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Zaxxon (Unlockable in the PS2 version only)
  • Zektor (Unlockable in the PS2 version only)
If this list is accurate, that would be only 28 games for the PSP verison, and 31 for the PS2. Not quite the 'over 30' claimed - for the PSP version, anyway.

American developers Backbone Entertainment will be running the production, with all games apparently "reproduced with the utmost accuracy to the originals as possible". Best of all, some of the games will be Wi-Fi enabled on the PSP version - score. As well as the swag of Mega Drive games, there will also be some unlockable content like developer interviews, a 'hint area' to provide assistance and a fact museum, with assorted information about the games.

Sega Genesis Collection is due for an American release in Q3 this year, but no PAL version has been mentioned at this stage. Here's hoping.

Actually it was. I just cant find a link to it icon_sad.gif

It was on the Mega Drive as a downgraded Saturn port, apparently.

Why the hell would you include a badly ported 3d game on a machine that was one of the 2d kings? Couldn't they have chosen any other 2d games? Seriously the mentality of some of these developers! icon_confused.gif

Also looks like the Ps2 version will be the one to get as it has a few more games as well as the ability to play in two-player mode much easier.

Also it's nice to see the Streets of Rage games have been passed up again! *sigh* The best games on megadrive (imo) and no one even bloody remembers! icon_cry.gif

Sega must be stupid, stupid stupid stupid!! Or they're so smart they're releasing the Streets of Rage games on their own. icon_eek.gif

Also hows this....you know the Japanese version of Sonic Gems Collection....or Sonic Mega Collection + (i think it was the former) actually had all 3 streets of rage games as unlockables but these were removed in other territories cuz it would be refused G classification. How about f#@k the G classification and leave the damn games on there!!!! Arrgghhhhh!!! icon_mad.gif

Keep in mind that list from 1Up.com is NOT official - the press release from Sega only had about four confirmed games in it, so 1Up either have another source or are lying. Probably the former, though.

*sigh* These collection series are starting to get on my nerves.
What they need is a collection of games that were popular but for gods sake put in some games that were excellent but at the time didn't sell well or never came out over here.
El viento I'm surprised never has been ported to a collection package.IMO that was the best game you could get on megadrive bar none.

This is AWSOME! Seriously.. The Ecco games were one of the major factors that got me to buy a Megadrive. Gain Ground is also one of my absolute favorite games from that period as well, altho the Master system version was superior (and the reason I am still trying to find a replacement master system after mine went to god about 2 years ago).

Man.. in fact that list has all but about three of my favorites on there.
- Humans
- Mega Bomberman
- Populous II: Two Tribes
If that collection had those games on it, I would buy it and just sell or give away my MegaDrive and my games cos i would not need them any more. I am a fan of games, not hardware.

I reckon we should make a list and just keep emailing it to sega. Like I could send 50 emails a day ....just spam them with these sorts of requests. They have to listen sometime....especially when it's coming from a variety of places!

I for one would love to get my hands on Alien Soldier & El Viento.

I actually hooked up my megadrive last nite and had a bit of a play of columns, classics though i think the controller is what makes them...

"Or maybe you want Altered Beast to rise from its grave"

Haha that's gold.

Pretty solid list, especially with Golden Axe in there. Put me down as another sad person with the lack of Streets of Rage though.

Actually I have all the streets of rage games on megadrive already....I just want them to be recognised.

Surprised Streets of Rage hasn't been given the next gen treatment.
Imagine streets of rage using the dead rising engine! icon_drool.gif

I think this is a glimpse to the future of the virtua console and it will help the PSP at least to sell a few more rounds, i think i'll get the one for the PS2.

Compilation releases like these make me glad i bought a gp2x, so i can spend my money on other games for the ds lite and psp that arent just old skool console ports [edit: (of games that don't interest me)]

I understand what you're saying, guys, but you can't blame Sega for not including Streets of Rage... blame the censors. The reason SoR wasn't included in the US/PAL version of Sonic Gems Collection is because it would've upped the rating from a G to an M. A lot of parents wouldn't allow their kids to play M rated games, so by including those games, Sega could potentially be reducing potential sales in the order of thousands.

I think it's funny how none of us thought anything bad of the game when it was released, yet now it's a huge issue, simply because it has knives in it. I guess it's just a good example of how oversensitive society is becoming.

That said, I'm totally stoked for this collection, as there are some real top notch games on there. Being able to play Mega Drive games (though far from perfect) has been my prime reason for not updating my PSP's firmware, but with the benefits of recent firmware (movie playback, etc), and a few gems coming out next year that I might not otherwise be able to play, I think I've finally been pushed over the edge.

There are plenty of great titles that are missing from this list, but I'd imagine Sega wouldn't put all their eggs in one basket, in case they want to produce a sequel. And some of the best games (Shining Force, Flashback, Jungle Strike) were either developed or codeveloped with other companies, which leads us into a steaming spaghetti pile of legality and copyright issues.

Personally, I'll be interested to see how the Wii Virtual Console fares... If only first party Nintendo and Sega games are on offer, a lot of people are going to be disappointed (No Chrono Trigger?? Yaaaah!!!)

EDIT: "Compilation releases like these make me glad i bought a gp2x, so i can spend my money on other games for the ds lite and psp that arent just old skool console ports. "

Damn right. Just like I'm glad I stole my car, so I don't get conned into paying $5,000 more for the next model of Holden which isn't that much of an improvement on last year's. It's the same reason I always do a runner at the Caltex, so I don't get ripped off having to pay for petrol like the rest of you suckers.

Paying full RRP for a compilation that you want 5 out of the 30 games offered is hardly logical.

You have never downloaded a single song off a half-arsed album?

One compilation i will be buying is Metal Slug Anthology which i think is definately worth the money.

Edit: Playing emulated games on your PSP doesn't make you any more honest. My PSP runs on firmware 2.80, i just choose to run emulators on my gp2x.

Miggz: Look at it this way. Nintendo fans were perfectly happy paying $70 to play Super Mario World on their GBA, so how could Sega fans be less happy paying around the same price for (give or take) 30 classic Sega titles?

As for playing Mega Drive games on my PSP, that would only make me "dishonest" if I were playing the roms INSTEAD of the retail version. If the only way to play a game is to use an emulator, then it's fair game in my book. If the game is UNABLE to be purchased, then the company isn't missing out on any revenue, which is the reason the practice is illegal in the first place. Should that game become available for purchase, however, you should pay for it like everyone else.

Take the Sonic 2 Beta, for example, which includes the Hidden Palace Zone, which was removed from Sonic 2. Were Sega to release a Director's Cut of Sonic 2 which featured that zone, I'd buy it in an instant. But as there's no other way to play it, I don't see why I should miss out on a piece of gaming history. Sega obviously doesn't deem it of any value, otherwise they'd include it in a retail version - thus if they consider it to be of no marketable value, it's hardly theft on my part, is it.

The way I see it, it's fine for me to have the roms for Sega games, because I'd pick them up in a snap if they ever became available for sale. Sega's certainly not losing any money off me. What YOU are saying, however, is that BECAUSE you got these games for free, you don't feel you should have to pay for them.

If everyone thought the way you did, then no one would buy these compilations, and thus the companies would no longer release them.

Nintendo would never release games on the PSP, so does that make it "okay" to have Nintendo ROMs on your PSP? The availability of games on certain consoles doesn't make it right for anyone to use ROMs. (Unless the ROMs are made freely available by the company who produced them.)

Some may argue that owning the original cartridges for those games entitles you to own the ROMs for said games.

But in saying that, wether or not you plan to buy the games when they release, having the ROMs on your PSP at this point in time doesn't make it more right than me having the ROMs on my gp2x or my PC.

Infact, what you are doing (playing emulated Sega games on your PSP which it was not intended for), is also denying Sony from any profits that it would otherwise have gained. Which is why they are trying to get people to upgrade their firmware. Maybe there isn't enough incentive for you to upgrade your firmware at the moment. I couldn't care less.

I bought the Capcom Classic Collection Remixed. I will be buying the Capcom Classic Collection Reloaded, and the Metal Slug Anthology when they release. So please don't go judging people you don't know.

Like you said, it all comes down to personal preference.

Miggz: So what you're actually saying is that you like Capcom games, so you're going to buy the Capcom Classic Collection Reloaded, but you don't like Sega games enough to buy the Sega Genesis Collection.

So you owning a GP2X has nothing to do with it. If you don't enjoy the games, why would you bother downloading them?

Each game on the Genesis Collection probably works out to be a few dollars each. If a game isn't worth a few measley bucks, it isn't worth playing to begin with.
Who said i didn't like Sega games? I have a Megadrive and own 3 of the 5 games i actually want in the collection (Golden Axe, Golden Axe 2 and Golden Axe 3).

And why would you bother buying a PSP if none of the software (ie. games & movies) interests you ? Could it be because of it's ability to emulate games?

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
