Castlevania coming to PSP

PSP News | Konami continues to system jump the franchise.
US site 1up has revealed a new Castlevania project for PSP, called Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles. It will be a port of two of the most sought after Castlevania titles, Akumajyou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (Dracula X: The Rondo of Blood) and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but unfortunately it appears the collection will be skipping the much maligned but still great SNES prequel Akumajyou Dracula XX, released here as Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss. Dracula X was a game for NEC's PC Engine Duo console, and while long considered the best game in the series, it never made it outside Japan, and thus the original release has become the holy grail of Castlevania collectors. Dracula X Chronicles will include the original game, as well as an updated remake with 3D graphics (hmm...). The package will also include its direct sequel, Akumajyou Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight, known to most people as Symphony of the Night. Symphony will not be treated as a remake in the package, but will have its localisation cleaned up for western release.

Castlevania fans may remember another Chronicles game was released in 2001 for the original PlayStation. It included a port of an obscure Castlevania 1 re-make for a Japanese computer called the Sharp X68000, as well as a re-mixed version of the same game. In a video interview on the disc, the producer hinted at another Chronicles title including Dracula X, but the failure of Chronicles to sell - aided by the combination of strange platform choice and bad timing (the PS2 and GameCube were already out at the time) it sank, and it seemed further Chronicles games would never be produced. Six years later we're finally getting the follow up. Although it has to be said, Konami has once again chosen an odd platform - after half a decade of sales success of GBA and DS, they have decided to split the series fan base over different platforms again, the same thing that almost killed the series in the late nineties.

This will be a great chance for Castlevania gamers to get their hands on the 'lost classic' Dracula X, and fans will appreciate that the game will finally get a western (and westernised) release. Add to that touched up localisation for Symphony (hopefully they start from scratch with the voice acting), and this could be one to look out for when it's released later this year.

Keep your eyes on PALGN for any updates.

If it turns out something like Megaman Mavick Hunter X I'd be stoked (different developer I know). Still, looks promising.

Somteimes good things really do come to those who wait. It's taken long enough for a Castlevania to come to the PSP, but this is such a brilliant sounding package that it's pretty damned hard not to break down and squeal with glee just thinking about it.

Just to clarify.
Vampires kiss was the inferior super nintendo port of the pc-engine cd game rondo of blood. not an original game on its own right.

No, Vampire's Kiss was a sequel/prequel in Japan, called Dracula XX. It has entirely new levels, and only a few bosses in common, so it was an original game on its own right.

God I've been waiting to play Rondo of Blood for years and they release it solely for PSP. I think I'm gonna cross my fingers and hold out hope that they port to PS2 later or release Rondo of Blood on Xbox360. It seems crazy to keep this heavily desired title solely on PSP unless Sony offered Konami a truck load of money.
