Lair playable on PSP

PSP News | Via Remote Play.
According to Kotaku and the Playstation Forums, Sony's dragon epic Lair is able to be played on your PSP via the Playstation 3's Remote Play function. Remote Play has existed for some months now, enabling PSP owners to browse their PS3's hard drive, play music and view pictures and videos (and now Folding@Home). However, outside of PS1 games, attempting to access any PSN titles or Blu-Ray games has come up with an error.

According to all reports, however, Factor 5's Lair is indeed playable via Remote Play, and whilst there seem to be a number of control issues due to lack of buttons, not to mention reduced image quality, it stands as an interesting proof-of-concept. It may not be long before PS3 owners can play their games from the comfort of their bedrooms, or indeed, anywhere in the world (WiFi access permitting).

I wonder how much the graphics are actually watered down when playing on PSP?

I always thought the PS3 just output it to the PSP screen and that was it, so the graphics wouldn't change?

At the end of the day, PS3 games on the go in the future?! YES! I can just imagine Super Stardust on the PSP now...

Wow, what a great idea... / unannounced feature.

I thought this article title was a trolling attempt.

I was wrong.

The potential for this is pretty impressive, especially considering the the reach of the connection.

Remote Play has incredible potential, but I've always found the image quality to be decidedly average...

Still, the potential is pretty mind-blowing when you consider MMOs. Can you imagine the ramifications of a portable World of Warcraft?

I don't think we'd need to worry about that. World of Warcraft users don't know the meaning of 'outside' icon_razz.gif

As for the image quality; if Lair is indeed playable on a PSP, it must have been designed as such from the outset seeing as the the PSP version must draw from a completely separate set of resources (models, textures, sounds). Wouldn't that be like creating a portable game alongside the console version? I don't know the facts so I'm only assuming that this is the case.

Well, that's the tricky thing about Remote Play. Lair is only "playable" on the PSP in the sense that you're using the PSP as the controller. The PS3 is actually playing/running/generating the graphics, before streaming it to the PSP. So, in essence, you're playing the game on the PS3 (using the PSP as a controller), and simultaneously watching a video of yourself playing it on the PSP's screen.

So... the PSP it isn't actually rendering anything? It's actually receiving a live video feed of the game running on your PS3 which in turn maintains the visual fidelity, albeit on a smaller scale? That's... f**king awesome icon_eek.gif

Although I can see how the controls might be gimped. To think that it would only take just one more analogue stick to make this thing run like clockwork... oh and I suppose an extra pair of shoulder buttons.

The potential is amazing, but like Capoeira stated; it is only hampered by the control layout of the PSP, which is lacking when placed into direct comparison with the SIXAXIS.

That's the basic idea.

On the positive side, it means you can play games your PSP that the hardware could never DREAM of (Lair or Heavenly Sword, for example). The negative side, however, is that you're limited by the fact that the video is streaming (without buffering, no less).

In other words, you can have hundreds of enemies on screen without any pop-up or frame rate issues, but the image will have a lot of artifacts. If you watch a video of a PS3 game on Youtube, you'll have a basic idea what to expect.

There was that patent Sony filed a while back, which would allow you to use a PS2/PS3 controller on the PSP. I wonder if it was in anticipation of this...

EDIT: I heard someone else bring up a good point - the fact that the PSP2K allows you to output the video to a TV...

So potentially, if you're going on holiday, you could leave your PS3 in Remote Play mode at home, hook your PSP up to any TV, plug a PS2 controller into the PSP, and presto - portable PS3.

Wow, that sounds really good. Starting to actually want to go buy a psp now. I cant wait to see what happens in the near future with this sort of connectivity

Well does that actually mean the game could actually be half decent on the Psp then seeing as it doesn't have motion sensing controls and that is really what the reviews are harking on?

It be interesting to know how it would play on the Psp compared.

Since the game also needs an L2, R2 and another Analog stick it would make playing this game pretty hard, but like other's this is a great example of what can be achieved if dev's aim to have both PSP and PS3 interactivity.

While i'm not sure if its something the dev's produced or something sony wanted to keep quiet about or maybe something they overlooked its a good discovery netherless.

If Sony are indeed planning to put the patent into that sort of use, then the sky really is the limit. It's good to see they are trying to think outside the norm with consoles.

^thats what i think the problem with the psp2k is, while i understand that they needed to keep the base so that all previous games won't goto waste, it did (personally) restrict how dev's could've developed for both the ps3/psp as in interactivity etc. That and it would've been a neat idea to actually be able to use the psp as a controller in some instances (just imagine being able to use the psp to control the mkII from mgs4 being able to have a friend control him while you control snake on the ps3) and so forth.

IMO the control lag will make all but turn-based and puzzle games impractical icon_sad.gif, still FF:XIII on a PSP would be AWESOME!

I agree ittekimasu, I bet Sony are kicking themselves over the control scheme of the PSP, now that they can't really touch it in fear of making titles preceeding the change unplayable / more difficult to play.

Not really videos have shown there is like seriously no lag. Cool idea though lots of potential.

They were probably on the same network in ideal conditions. Over the net would probably be a different story, and in games it can only take a 0.05 second delay for lag to start being rather noticable, take a look at PC FPS games where there are players who complain when they have a ping of over 30 (0.03 seconds).

It would not play well on the PSP. On the PSP, you cannot brake, and there are alot of motion-controlled attacks implemented into the gameplay.

You can't even play out the first tutorial on your PSP, it requires you to brake to advance. You have to use remote play after the tutorial.

People are saying that playing Lair on PSP is much better because you use the analog stick and not the motion sensing sisaxis

^^
Yeah I heard that too. I personally think that it wouldn't control to well, but you never know! Good idea as well, putting PS3 games on PSPs. icon_smile.gif

I think the idea of playing a scaled down version of your favourite game on the go is a much better idea, what they're doing here doesn't seem all that practical.
