Pursuit Force was one of the more spectacular pieces of original software on the PSP back in 2005, and BigBig Studios has set out to make Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice bigger and badder in every way. Players will now have five characters to choose from, and coincidentally, five gangs to bring down. The action this time will take place over land, sea and in the air. 50 cases are set to be in the game, spread over 7 different environments. The developer is promising that they will have more vehicles and weapons to assist in eliminating the criminal threat. Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice will also feature ad-hoc multiplayer for up to four players.
The level of the game we sampled at eGames had us in control of the familiar pursuit car from the first game. Our objective was to chase down and ram four souped up gang cars, which were of course conveniently covered in spikes and the like. On a positive note, Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice handles incredibly well – particularly for a game on the PSP that relies primarily on the analogue nub for the majority of its directional control. Conversely, the game was not particularly clear on just what counts as a ram; apparently slamming into one of the cars at a 90 degree angle isn’t a slam, but slightly nudging him is. It's safe to assume that the other missions in the game are more action packed than this, involving lots of shooting and jumping from vehicle to vehicle.
Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice really felt like it was more of the same over the top action delivered by the first game. Of course, the rest of the game has a lot more new content to offer, but we were very pleased with the consistent quality of the sequel. Our experience with the game was every bit as enjoyable as the original Pursuit Force, even if the level that we tested did not demonstrate any of the new features promised for the sequel.
As one would expect, Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice also has a particularly good visual presentation, with detailed character models, lively environments and fast-paced action. The game seems to be a little more colourful than its predecessor, which should please those who are tired of brown and grey games on their PSP. Due to the rather noisy PlayStation 3 set up near the PSP section, we had a bit of trouble hearing the game’s sound, but we expect it should be up to scratch.
Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice was originally set to ship to stores this week, but was suddenly pushed back into December for reasons unexplained. We're pretty happy with the shape that the game is in at this point - it seems like it has everything you want from a sequel. Wannabe extreme cops should keep their eye out for Extreme Justice on shelves from December 6 on PlayStation 2 and PSP.
