GTA 4 set to increase Xbox Live subscribers

360 News | Game also poised to dominate online.
Microsoft expects the massive success of Grand Theft Auto IV to propel it to the number one spot on Xbox Live, reports Reuters. The company also believes Rockstar's game will boost the number of Xbox Live subscribers.

Aaron Greenberg, Director of Product Management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, believes Grand Theft Auto IV will generate big business for Microsoft. Greenberg says GTA has the potential to become the top game on Live, and more importantly, to increase the number of subscribers to the online service. "The multiplayer in this game is so well implemented that I can't imagine anyone owning a copy without trying to play it on Xbox Live," he stated.

"GTA is unique because it appeals to such a large audience. It will likely be the best-selling game launched all year and we expect it will drive a lot of new members to Xbox Live," Greenberg concluded.

GTA has broken retail sales records in the UK and overtaken first day sales of Halo 3, according to gamesindustry.biz. With such figures, the game could possibly become the number one game on Xbox Live, which has traditionally been dominated by first-person shooters like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Indeed, IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon believes that GTA could attract gamers who aren't interested in titles like Halo 3 to going online. "[GTA] can lead the way online for a large contingent of players who don't play first-person shooters," he said.

For anyone out there still deciding whether or not to pick up the game, why not check out PALGN's review or our staff and reader roundtable on whether GTA has lived up to the hype?

Well, the Sony PlayStation 3 version seems to be having most of the problems when venturing online. So, it only seems logical.

seems cool, maybe they will even intoduce a mode where we can choose to play with Aussie gamers only! good connections please! This would make the game alot more fun online imo.

Really? I can't seem to find out how to do it. I don't even know how to make a game. The game is fun to play online but the matchmaking seems like a complete joke (well not user friendly at least).

It's pretty straightforward to make a game, y'know icon_wink.gif

I think this has more to do than the 1 free month of Live Gold than by any virtue of the game itself.

The matchmaking in this game couldn't be any simpler.
Pop up the phone, got to multiplayer goto custom game, make the game type you want , then through the friends list invite people.

Also drinniol are you talking about the free 1 month due to making a new account or the 1 month bonus which comes with GTA4?
As I have played a heap of online multiplayer and have noticed probably about 98% of the people I have played against have the headset plugged in hence they have the xbox live subscription.
I can only imagine that free one month combined with GTA4 is only going to massively tempt alot of people to go and renew/buy the service too.It sold me..lol.
