You may have been living under a large rock of some kind, and if that's the case, basically Unreal Tournament is all about killing each other in competitive matches with other players. It can be played offline, sure, but it's definitely geared as a multiplayer experience, and there's nothing quite as satisfying as blowing your opponents to absolute bits with futuristic weapons in a variety of different scenarios. Unreal Tournament III is the first version of the game to appear on the current generation of consoles, and benefits greatly from it. The whole thing looks great, with lots of detail in the maps and realistic (if not a little bit overly muscly) looking character models.
The game still handles similarly to that of its PS3 cousin, with very fast paced shooter mechanics that rely heavily on attacking as quickly as you can before respawning and getting back into the action as swiftly as possible. There's massive leaps, teleporting, insane weaponry and bodies flying everywhere as you try your best to survive and get kills... but that's what Unreal Tournament has always been about, so why should it be any different here? If you're expecting a unique experience to what was already released earlier this year, you're not going to find one; but the game does include some unique features of its own in an attempt to make the Xbox 360 version 'worth the wait', so to speak.
The most obvious new addition is the fact that the game can be played on a split-screen for online and offline competitive and cooperative multiplayer, and will also include five new maps, two new characters, and any other downloadable content that has already been made available on the other versions of the game. Even on split screen the game looks impressive, and being able to play with people sitting right next to you can, of course, add a lot to the experience. It's also worth mentioning that the user-created content that has made the Unreal games so popular in the past still hasn't been confirmed, but we have our fingers crossed.
The 'campaign' remains fairly throwaway, considering it's just a series of bot matches tied together by an incredibly loose story - but Unreal Tournament III should be purchased as a multiplayer only experience, as solo players (or anyone who isn't keen to jump online) aren't going to find much longevity in repeating game modes against a bunch of AI opponents. Unreal Tournament III is coming together as a very addictive and visually impressive multiplayer experience, and the added features for this version of the game should be reason enough for any shooter fan to give this one a crack when it's released on the Xbox 360 early next month.
