The video begins with an introduction by Cliff Bleszinski, the lead game designer who states that the team wanted to "take the game to the next level". Rod Fergusson, the producer of Gears of War 2 is also on the video. The video contains four different focuses, with both CliffyB and Rod taking a look at the new maps, new modes, new weapons and new finishing moves.
Three maps are revealed for the multiplayer element of the game; River, Security and Gridlock. River is based on a location that players will traverse through in the single player mode of Gears of War 2. Security is a mysterious cog outpost with lasers and Gridlock is a reimagining of the Gridlock map from the first Gears of War title.
Three multiplayer modes are revealed, first up CliffyB confirms the player count has been increased to 5v5. The three multiplayer modes revealed are meatflag, wingman and guardian. Meatflag is like capture the flag but with a living person, so you're playing capture the flag with a flag that could kill you. Wingman is where it is you and a partner playing against everyone else and Guardian is Assassination 2.0 and poses the question, what if the leader was the reason you could respawn? So as soon as the leader dies you are out.
The video then moves onto some of the new weapons in the game. The first weapon introduced is the scorcher, which is described as the "flamethrower from hell". Players are also able to carry around a shield and use poison grenades, which create a cloud of dust. It will also be possible to take any of the three grenades and attach them to a wall to use as a proximinity mine. The game will also contain chainsaw battles, when two players come together with their chainsaws they will need to push B rapidly and in three seconds someone will win and cut the other player in half.
The game will also contain new finishing moves. In Gears 2 you'll be able to knock someone down and while they can try and crawl away from you if you do get ahold of them you can take them as a hostage, or by pressing Y you can pull off an execution, which may break their neck or execute them in some other way.
The video finishes off with a note about the way that Gears of War 2 has been better balanced. Apparantly in the first Gears lots of people were rolling towards their enemies and shotgunning towards the end, so the developers looked into the idea of stopping power. This means players will slow down and actually earn their kills.
With brand new in game footage and a huge look at Gears of War 2 the content included on Unreal Tournament III is well worth a watch. Look out for our review of Unreal Tournament III next week.
