What’s essentially going on here is that players will have access to both a classic port of the original games as well as a high definition 'remix'. From there, they will have all of the general options that are available to one within a fighting game. Single player gives an assortment of ways to tackle your typical arcade ladder, while multiplayer can be played against each other on the one screen or across their respective networks. The game also adds leaderboards, for those who can handle the Xbox 360 d-pad better than mere mortals.
Having played through Commando 3: Wolf of the Battlefield, we had access to the online beta for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Suffice to say, the limited nature of the beta wouldn’t make it your priority when considering a purchase of the former. You only have access to online multiplayer between two characters, Ken and Ryu, and we only saw the one level during our play time. However, you do get to play through the ‘Quarter Mode’.
Apparently, the primary purpose of the beta was to test the online code. However, it would probably have been handy if the beta was more readily available. Namely because even though the games we played were across a solid connection, finding players was a bit of a lottery, particularly as we waited for people to join in as spectators. People seemed to want to play more than watch. Still, aside from being whooped by a few on an American connection, as well as some odd ‘speed-up’, the code overall seems to have been well optimised so far.
For some reason, the game didn’t let us play in the ‘classic mode’ but we did get a fair look at the remix. Both the character models and the backgrounds have been redone by Udon Comics, in order to play in HD. They are also responsible for a new set of Street Fighter II comics that are coming up. The core gameplay seems to have remained fairly similar, despite the visual overhaul. While this may have led to some jerkiness as the animations were in transition, it overall looked and played solid.
Given that Street Fighter II has essentially been done to death, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is a strange release, and one that is difficult to look forward to. From our brief play time, things seem to be shaping up reasonably well, even if it doesn’t really depart from a well-worn formula. So if you really can’t get enough of SFII, or will find it more convenient to relive your multiplayer exploits online, this game may have something for you.
