Microsoft boss says Wii gamers will graduate to 360

360 News | Once the novelty wears off.
Microsoft director of product management for 360 and Live, Aaron Greenberg, has suggested that the Nintendo Wii is mostly just a novelty device for parties, and that gamers will so want to 'graduate' to the Xbox 360.

"Everyone says that eventually the novelty will wear off, right? I think that a lot of the people that are buying that console today are not people that have generally bought consoles in the past, right?" asked Greenberg, in a recent interview with Gamasutra.

"You see they're not buying games on it, right? They're buying it, it's like something they break out when people come over, and it's maybe a fun thing, but it's almost like the same people that buy a karaoke machine, you know? They're not really buying it for games, they're just buying it as a novelty."

In addition, Greenberg doesn't actually see the Wii as a competitor.

"I think for us, we don't really see the Wii as a direct competitor, we actually very much complement the Wii experience. It's obviously clear that we're going head-to-head with the PS3 in this generation. I think what Xbox will be able to do as well as the Wii is grow the market."

Greenberg also praised the Wii, saying that the extra markets they have created will benefit Microsoft in the future, as gamers move onto other consoles.

"In this generation we're seeing record revenues for the US and globally for the business, and we're seeing more people buying and playing games than ever before, and the Wii is definitely part of that. And as they grow that pie, that benefits us too, because those customers are eventually going to want to graduate to an Xbox 360 experience."

I've left my 360 long behind after having too many RROD. PS3 seems to be a lot more reliable but I find myself paying a bit more for games now icon_sad.gif

yeah the novelty wears off, its nearly been two years already and the novelty still seems to be going pretty strong dont you think???

why dont they something more realistic like wii owners will more then likely be two console owners and the second one will be a 360...i have to admit i havent bought a game for my wii since mario galaxy icon_sad.gif

Problem: He's saying that "gamers" will graduate to 360 from Wii. I don't know many "gamers" who only own a Wii to begin with - most of that crowd are friends I wouldn't even come close to calling "gamers."

People graduated towards PS2 because it became more accessible; more casual, not the other way around.

What crap, the Wii is not a novelty, it's a great, fun console and I know alot of long time gamers who have numerous consoles who have a Wii. To say that customers are going to graduate to the 360 is a very aggrogant and offensive thing to say to all the Nintendo fans.

Has that Greenberg idoit not noticed that the Wii is outselling and the PS3 and Xbox 360, by a fairly large margain, it's been dominating the sales for some time, especially in Japan, where the Xbox 360 is selling the least. So to say that the Wii is no competitor and the PS3 is more competition is retarded. Come on IMO this generation the PS3 will never been a threat to Xbox 360.

Only a nintendo fanboy would've found that offensive, honestly if anything Nintendo fanboy's have the edge to laugh back at them, due to the large margin of sales compared to the 360.

I'm not sure why he would say such things, but it must hurt to lie.

Dude I own a Xbox 360 and I don't own a Wii, but I do support Nintendo. The whole article was crap, who cares what different consoles people own, why the hell does every company have to go on and on about being the best and people will start buying our consoles more etc. The 3 consoles this generation appeal to different people, so why not just focus on that rather than running the other consoles down. You never hear Nintendo doing **** like that.

How many games have you bought for that gamecube in the past year?
I have a gamecube and a DS too but I wouldn't say I support Nintendo, I used to support Nintendo do then I decided I was sick of paying a company to kick me in the teeth because I had the audacity to live in Australia.

I brought the Gamecube this year and have 11 games for it. I have 10 DS games and 5 GBA games and will be getting 3 more GBA games next week.

I also have a PS2 and Xbox 360, but the majorrity of my gaming collection consists of Nintendo titles.

How do they kick you in the teeth?

Ohhh come on ZeldaMario are you seriously asking how do they kick you in the teeth. Have you seen what happened with the freeloader also have you seen Nintendo release dates. All of them show how pal gets treated like ****.
Xbox 360 get the same treatment with some of there game titles, look at Tales of Vesperia, eg coming to USA and Asia in August and due for AUS PAL release in 2009. It's all consoles in general within Australia that have that problem, not just the Wii
3 years ago
Yeah but the Wii has that problem with a large majority of its games.

Really are you serious i could name you an entire list of wii games with **** releases. TBH the 360 is exactly how ninitendo should be doing thing with regards to release dates. IF you got blue dragon it was released a couple of days after usa and it's a 3 disc dvd game. There is no excuse for Nintendo. Do i really need to bring up smash anyone seriously, please don't defend Nintendos release dates, because they just suck!

I am getting a 360 later for a release of a certain game, but the Wii titles I am interested in greatly outweighs what titles I want for 360.

I won't be graduating, I'm just getting an afternoon snack. See Microsoft, you're just a snack icon_smile.gif

Australia gets shafted full stop with game release dates. Look at how long Rock Band is taking to get released here, aswell as the Limited Edition versions of games, as they are often not as good as the overseas versions. I can't really comment on the Wii release dates, as I don't own a Wii, although Brawl took ages to get released here.

I'm not defending Nintendo's release dates

Yeah i am not trying to diss the wii, i have a usa one to save on time. I just have been noticing a lot o 360 games coming out a week or days to when the usa gets them. I personally think thats how it should be for every console not months. Thats all heheh i just hate waiting ^^.
I agree with Itachi, It sucks waiting when the US gets games months earlier. I have found that with alot of DS titles too, abit of a wait until they get released here.

You see they're not buying games on it, right?
That pretty much backs up the arugment as far as I'm concerned. The Wii is certainly more of a offset 'toy' console compared with the PS3/360. I'd wager money that most 'hardcore' gamers that own the Wii, have at least a 360 or PS3.

Why "graduate" from a console when you can always go back to your favourites? Great games don't just expire and wear off. I can see wii owners possibly becoming more adventurous if their gaming experiences started with the wii initially, but I don't see why that means moving on to another console completely.

Expanding your horizons doesn't mean limiting your choices.

I have a Wii and a 360, and the Wii has some great games, and is really fun when people come over. A lot of the people I play the Wii with wouldn't wanna play a 4 player death match in Fall of Man, so the Wii is a great choice.

Eh, just typical PR speak. The guy knows he's lying through his teeth.

If he doesn't, THEN something is wrong. Especially if he believes the 9 year old comment. Wii Fit isn't selling millions and millions to a bunch of 9 year old tubbies.
