Peter Molyneux gives Fable II '9 out of 10'

360 News | One point deducted because he's so humble.
CVG is reporting that in an interview with their cousin magazine, Xbox World 360, Fable II creator Peter Molyneux has rated his own game a "9 out of 10."

Molyneux believes, "It's the best, most complete game I've ever worked on. The look is perfect, the interface is fantastic. It's a role-playing game, but where are all the f***ing icons? Aren't you supposed to be cluttering the screen up with mini-maps and the like? Not us."

Peter Molyneux has previously found success with with games such as The Movies, Black and White and the original Fable. Fable II is believed to have recently gone gold at Lionhead, and is expected to launch on Xbox 360 in Australia on October 25th, 2008.

I know his games are good - but this takes "Blowing your own trunpet" to a whole new level ...

and i can just see that when the people objective, and qualified enough to actually give the game a 9/10 (or, god-forbid, lower) he'll rant about how people didn't "get it".

Hey, don't knock the neux, at least he tries to innovate instead of just pumping out generic FPS after generic FPS

I loved the original Fable and I hope the sequel is gonna be better. Although, I do wish Molyneux not to be over confident.

I like Molyneux, but sometimes he just needs to shh.

Waitwaitwait... 9/10? So the lead developer is saying its not as perfect as it could be? Then get the damn thing back in the kitchen and make it perfect.

Also, developers really need to learn to shut up, it didn't help Dyack and it probably won't help Mr. If-only-I-had-a-z-in-my-name-it-would-have-been-super-kickass-in-Scrabble either.

Peter Molyneux is about objective when reviewing his own games as a legitimate Russian journalist is reporting about the Kremlin.

This just in, a survey of Coca-Cola executives says that Coco-Cola is in fact the best soft drink ever made, well there you have it folks, right from the horses mouth.

I don't know about you Tom, but I think if everyone just reviewed their own products the whole World would be a much better place... at least on paper.

Yeah, with Molyneux it's original RPG after original RPG... Oh wait it's a sequel.

Anyhow, LOL and I don't really care, I'll still buy the game. icon_smile.gif

Only the Fable games have been conventional RPG's. Black & White games were god/RTS games, and The Movies was a sim/management game.

Nothing wrong with being proud of your work, but he better pray the reviewers and gaming sites think the same when they review the game.. or we might have another one of thsoe... uhm that guy that nobody likes and isn't really an important director but still tries to get his flop of a movie into the box office icon_annoyed.gif can't think of the name.

I actually like that 2nd paragraph with "aren't you supposed to clutter the screen?" Obviously he's never heard of menu clutter "Confirm walking? Are you sure? Absolutely positive? Well, don't blame me if a cliff pops out of nowhere.." but yeah sure, no icy icon or anything so the "mood" isn't broken until you probably open a menu and your head explodes.

Am I the only person who thinks he's just giving an honest assessment of his own work (people are allowed to do this without coming off as pompous wanks, right?), and people are taking it slightly out of context?
Quote
"I'd rate it a 9 out of 10," Molyneux added, when asked if he'd fulfilled his original vision with Fable II.
He never said 'It's a 9/10 game', it was more a reflective statement on how he feels he's achieved his goals.

What's wrong with being proud of your work, anyway? I mean, if he didn't like it, would the game be going gold this week?

What the hell was he supposed to say? "I'd give it an 8/10 - once again I've failed to come through on my promises."

And if it fails in whatever regard for whatever reason would that mean he only has 1 point of improvement before he's plum out of ideas on how to improve an RPG because "it's almost perfect"? By all means be proud of what you've produced, but at the same time be careful of what is said in public in regards to it since people draw their own conclusions and fable 2 could flop simply because he opened his mouth and created even more expectation for it.

Something along the lines of his original "it's the best most complete game I've worked on..." to show how proud he is instead of the "9/10, bam clutter the screen with useless f'n icons and gadgets, I mean **** man!" came out pompous and arrogant.

^ So, one shouldn't air an opinion publicly because it might conflict with other's opinions... ?

All that's being said here is 'I feel that I've made this game nearly everything that I wanted it to be, and I think it is better than most other similar titles' - not 'I've made this game nearly everything a game can be, and it's better than most everything else'. There's a difference.

I suspect a lot of the 'RARRRR 9/10 RRRAAARRR' generated from this news is purely from the headline(s) used to report it, which (from what I've seen) are largely like this one - which cast the matter as an act of extreme arrogance.

One should not air opinion publicly and then proceed to ridicule valid attempts at streamlining because one did not feel the need to use them, because then one could be construed as being an arrogant toss. That is of course unless there were editorial liberties taken from the quotations, I just fail to see how a guy saying he made what he thinks is the best game hes worked on then rants about "f'n icons" being anything but ending with some arrogance.

To be honest, that line stood out at me too - but working around people who talk in the same manner about design choices in games has desensitized me to it as something fairly par for course.

I get the impression of a guy who is quite passionate about his work, being perhaps a little too relaxed in an interview and just saying whatever comes to mind without the usual amount of screening, more than of someone just being an arrogant prod.

Comeon, you gotta let the developers have there own "celebrities", otherwise it'd be pretty boring here.

He, Cliff, Itagaki, Hideki, Kamiya etc are all awesome

I'd love to see what some other developers rate their games. Was Too Human a 9/10 to Silicon Knights? What about Halo 3 or GTAIV?

For me though, it really does make me excited about Fable 2. I really haven't gotten into the hype at all, until late. As a result, his comments actually get me excited. Its actually ahead of Fallout 3 in my books, so far.
