POTW: The Christmas game glut

360 Feature | How many games will bankrupt you this holiday season?
It seems that every year, the videogame industry follows the maxim of saving the best 'til last. Publishers seem to stack the year's releases with a heavy emphasis on the Christmas season, and this year is no exception. Despite a handful of blockbusters landing earlier in the year (such as Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4), it still seems like we'll soon be inundated with a plethora of high-profile videogame releases. A brief glance at our release list confirms the worst: between now and December 25, we'll be looking at Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Fable II, Guitar Hero World Tour, the usual smattering of yearly sports games, and many, many more.

So, with the months-early sales of Christmas decorations already occurring in a store near you, we thought it time to take stock and prepare for the onslaught ahead. How many games do you plan to purchase this Christmas season?

The sad thing here is that every one of them is a sequel. icon_sad.gif The number of sequels seems to increase with every passing year, and I don't think it's a good thing. We need some more new IPs people!

^ Unlike movies however, games usually improve with each iteration so it's not all bad to enjoy sequels. It's all well and good to cry out for entirely new IP, but they rarely, if ever, have the completeness and polish that a 2nd or 3rd sequel will.

^ Couldn't have put it better myself.

Although, Gears 2, for example, will probably be more of what we already know. For me, thats spectacular. For others, stale.

I'm on the 360 boat again. Gears 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, and yet to buy Force Unleashed.

Then I also had to make the decision yesterday of how many Little Big Planets to get in on release.

...geez, and I'm still in the PS2 generation. icon_razz.gif

I'll probably get the items for a new PC and a couple of games for it. That'll be OK for me.

Seriously, a lot of those game's I know I will not like, so i'll just find 2 odd games and be done with it for Christmas. Dropbear: Waiting for FF13 since 2006.
