Tomb Raider: Underworld DLC

360 News | Exclusive chapters only for Xbox 360.
Eidos has announced exclusive downloadable content for the Xbox 360 version of the upcoming Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Containing up to six hours of gameplay, the two chapters, Tomb Raider: Underworld - Beneath the Ashes and Tomb Raider: Underworld - Lara’s Shadow will deliver two very different single player gameplay experiences.

The chapter Beneath the Ashes takes place after the Underworld story has finished and will feature a new environment to explore, additional secrets to unlock and different enemies to fight. The other chapter Lara’s Shadow will introduce players to a new kind of playable character which will hopefully add a unique twist to the Tomb Raider experience.

“We’re thrilled that Xbox owners will be able to extend their Lara Croft adventures with exclusive Tomb Raider: Underworld episodes,” said George Peckham, General Manager of Global Third Party Publishing for Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “We look forward to continue working closely with our great publishing partners to deliver the most robust gaming experiences, only on Xbox 360.”

The first new chapter, Beneath the Ashes, will be available for download exclusively on the Xbox Live Marketplace this Christmas. Lara’s Shadow will follow in early 2009.

*Sigh*, another nail in the coffin of getting the full game when it's released. One of these chapters comes out less than ONE MONTH after the game is released, the level is obviously finished and they are just raping gamers for extra cash. If it was like 6 months to a year later I would understand, but weeks after release!?!? I guess it's a good thing I'm not interested in this game anyway.

Well they won't be getting any extra cash from me as I don't own a 360 and even if I did, I would still buy the game for PS3.

Its just disgusting.. I can only see this trent continuing in the future..

*Games Developer submits complete game to publisher*
Publisher: Hmm.. how's about you cut off the last 20% of the game and we'll sell it as 'downloadable content'...
Developer: But...
Publisher: You are MY lackey.. you do it NOW!! MONEY MONEY MONEY GIMME GIMME GIMME..

What's next? You get to the final boss and it says.. please insert coin into xbox to continue..

How much did Microsoft give them I wonder? I mean considering the amount they'll probably end up making from DLC(I suspect only about %30 of people who buy it on 360 will download it) it couldn't have been that much.
I mean I'm really looking forward to this game but it's not exactly a system seller or anything. I just think this whole exclusive downloadable content is overhyped, I mean it didn't really make a difference to GTAIV sales in the end.

You guys are assuming that the content is being cut from the final retail product. I'd argue that Underworld is in the final stages of production right now, and if this content were to be included in that retail product, the release would be pushed back at least another couple of months.

Although the first downloadable expansion is coming a mere month after the retail release, that doesn't mean it was withheld to milk us for everything. I doubt that Microsoft would have paid for this exclusive content and held back an announcement until a month before release unless it was something that had been in negotiation leading up until just now.

I'm sure that the core development team has finished duties on Underworld, and jumped straight into developing the downloadable content announced here. A few months is a reasonable amount of time to complete a small scale expansion given the ground work is there, and the new content just needs to be laid on top.

It hasn't even been confirmed that we have to purchase the chapters. For all we know, Underworld could follow in Burnout Paradise's footsteps and offer free content long after launch. It's not without reason, as it would have to be funded by Microsoft. After all, they are the ones who would have had to negotiate this deal in the first place.

I look forward to Tomb Raider Underworld even more so now, and applaud the announcement of downloadable episodes to continue the adventure.

I'm pretty sure the advent of downloadable content well after a game's release is pretty much to stop the retailers doing Pre-Owned games which pretty much rip off everybody but the Retailer themselves.

Burnout Paradise is doing it, I'm expecting many, many more to follow.

Just noticed that the article doesn't mention that a Tomb Raider Underworld demo will be available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace this month (October). =D

DLC is so overrated. I personally hate the stuff unless its free or minimal. When it comes to old PSone games i dont mind forking out $10 to get it on my PS3, and all wallpapers and themes are free on the PS3.. but to spend "points" and money on crap that SHOULD be free is a rip off. The ONLY DLC i'd ever even consider buying is the Fallout 3 stuff and thats only cause i'm like crazy about Fallout. But.. im getting the PS3 version anyway so thats no help to me. I mean i dont mind logging onto Xbox Live every now and again but theres no way i'm forking out $90 a year + $$$ on crap that i can get for free on the PSN.

A great number of people, actually. Crystal Dynamics have done great things with Tomb Raider, and brought the franchise back from rock bottom. TR: Legend, and TR: Anniversary are fantastic games and TR: U is shaping up to be of the same standard. I don't know if it's wise to draw such comparisons, but I find it strange that there wasn't this much backlash against Rockstar when the exclusive episodic content was announced for GTA IV, long before its release, and that was a game with a much higher profile than Tomb Raider.
