E3 2009: Monkey Island revealed for PC, WiiWare, XBLA

360 News | Look behind you! A three-headed monkey!
After a few weeks of speculation, LucasArts has confirmed The Secret of Monkey Island will be remade for the Xbox Live Arcade and PC later this year. The publisher also took the time to announce a new episodic series, called Tales of Monkey Island, which will be heading to Nintendo's WiiWare service and PC.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is a completely re-imaged version of the 1990 original. The game sees players assume the role of Guybrush Threepwood, an enthusiastic traveler who is attracted to the rumoured treasures hidden on Monkey Island. Wanting to become a pirate, Guybrush travels to the port of Mêlée and attempts to win the confidence of the local pirates. In addition to high definition graphics, the remake will also boost a re-mastered musical score and feature a new hint system which is designed to help players through the more challenging puzzles.

Developed by Telltale, Tales of Monkey Island is an episodic series which is based on the Monkey Island franchise. The series will span across five episodes, and will follow Guybrush as he tries to reverse a voodoo pox which threatens to turn all the buccaneers of the Caribbean into pirate monsters. Apparently the first episode will be released within the next few weeks, with additional episodes to be released afterward on a monthly basis.

I won't be using the hint system, but I guess it's handy for all these new gamers who wouldn't know a challenge if it came up and bit them on the butt.

No psn love? Sigh. Guess its steam for me.

I just hope they keep the same level of humour as the original monkey islands.

From memory, telltale games never had release a game on the Sony platform other than its first CSI, which was on the PS2.

And I had to do a double take when I saw it was being made by Telltale. That's amazing news.

It doesn't look like Ron Gilbert is involved with the new Telltale one. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Also the remake of the original could go either way depending on how well they execute it.

I'm putting this out there with complete confidence: This is some of the best news that'll come out of E3.

Thoroughly impressed.
