Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 bargain round-up

360 News | Survive the retailer battlefield with our handy price guide.
Perhaps the most anticipated game of the year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is officially released today. As usual, we’ve compiled a list of the current sales which are happening across Aussie retailers to ensure you get a good deal before you go shooting it up online. To start off though, we’ll discuss the different versions that are available.

Modern Warfare 2 is available on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and comes in three packages. There’s a Prestige Edition which contains a pair of night vision goggles, an art book, steel casing, a download code for the original Call of Duty on XBLA or PSN depending on the console it’s for, and of course a copy of Modern Warfare 2. Unfortunately, it is not available for PC and has even apparently sold out via pre-orders, so if you haven’t secured your copy by now then you’ve missed out. Next up is the Hardened Edition, which includes everything the Prestige Edition has minus the night vision goggles. Finally, there’s the Standard Edition which is a standalone copy of the game and a manual insert. For those who are curious, the Standard and Hardened Editions both normally cost $119.95 on PS3 and Xbox 360, while the PC standard edition has a RRP of $99.95.

There’s some good news and some bad news concerning the sales going on at the moment. The good news is most retailers are selling the standard edition for around $40 less than the suggested retail price, while the bad news is there are no specials available for the Hardened Edition. Dick Smith comes out on top with its price tag of $77 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, while Big W is the second best option with its price of $78. Those wanting to pick up the PC version should head into Kmart and JB Hi-Fi as they are both selling it for a mere $79.

With so many other great games being released this year, you will be forgiven if you don’t quite have enough cash on you at the moment. Never fear though, as there are several trade-in deals on offer. First up, EB Games is offering the Xbox 360/PS3 version for $39.95 and the PC version for $19.95 when you trade-in two selected games. GAME are doing a similar deal, only you have to trade-in one game that’s on their eligible titles list to grab Modern Warfare 2 on 360 or PS3 for $59.95. Finally, JB Hi-Fi is offering the standard edition for FREE on Xbox 360 or PS3 when you trade-in three games – just remember to read their exclusions list (.pdf file) before charging into your local store.

A full list of specials can be found below. All prices were correct at the time of publishing but are subject to change. If you have anything to add to this list please email joseph.rositano@palgn.com.au or leave a message in the comments section.

The EB website isn't listing Modern Warfare 2 on PC but still lists the console versions, and the link to the trade-in list for EB isn't working either, probably gonna pick this up for PC like I did with the first game.

I'm glad new release games are no longer being charged at $119. I think retailers realize that they sell more with a lower price point.

I'm just glad I went with Game on the web and pre-ordered the PC version - instant $20 off the price, bringing it down to JB's level and meaning I don't have to beat the rest of the population back with a bat trying to get a copy in-store.

Kmart it is for me. Too bad I've got another major essay due tomorrow, I might have to wait a couple of days to grab this one.

Didn't preorder so just went in last night, paid for the standard edition on PC (which was the only version available for it anyway apparently) about 11PM, had the second ticket so was literally in and out. They price-matched with the 360/PS3 JB price so I walked out with it for $82. I was happy enough with that, not desperate for that extra $3 LOL.

Logged in via US Steam, 65 bucks tyvm, and my cap rolled over last night so I exploited the time before I would get shaped / rolled over and preloaded the data (and left4dead2). Yay for cheap games. lol

How'd you manage that? Logging into US steam I mean. I thought there were preventative measures for that..unless you went ninja and used a proxy.

Just picked up the 360 version for $78 at big W this morning. Looking forward to playing it. I know most will jump straight into the multiplayer but I am very interested in how the single player mode will play out.

@ Zhou. All you need to do is pay with a cc. Goto the site with http://store.steampowered.com/?cc=us (you can use any country code to access other countries also, such as ?cc=uk or ?cc=ca ,etc). Then when you enter your billing details enter everything like normal then select the country from the drop down list according to what you set the url as (e.g. United States if you did ?cc=us). I did this method also, but got it from UK (was like a dollar cheaper than US with exchange). It works perfectly, I got L4D2 like this also (and it was uncensored!)

Couldn't get a copy today icon_sad.gif JB in Brisbane CBD was closed at lunch because a fire alarm went off. EB and GAME wouldn't match the Trade 3 Get it Free offer.

I went back to JB at 5pm and found out when I got there that they wouldn't do the Trade in because their computers were still down icon_sad.gif It was too late to get to another store (MacGregor is closest to where I live) because they closed at 6pm.

They better not have sold out by tomorrow, because I wanted to pre-order/reserve a copy on Monday, but they couldn't be bothered and told me "we won't sell out, we have tonnes of it out back".

Concerning the EB Games trade-in link:

Due to recent upgrades to their site I'm afraid the link has been taken down and not replaced (eg. no trade-in exclusions list etc).

I have removed the link from the article. Cheers.

What the... false advertisement, much?

Please update the Myer one, we're stocking it for $89.

EDIT: We also price-match.

User satish89 managed to get a trade 3 games in for cod mw 2 @ game myer centre. Apparently they had a print of jb's exclusion list and matched that too..

First time I've heard of it.

We don't do trade-ins, so someone on staff's obviously clocked out, or was trippin' or sometthing XD

Good deal though!

But yeah, we have it for PS3 and 360 only, don't come looking for PC copies with us. During the day no one was coming in, and I thought "oh no one buys good games at Myer obviously", but then later in the day there was a sudden huge influx once JB etc had sold out.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realise you meant GAME in the Myer Centre, Adelaide. Obviously, they do trade-ins icon_biggrin.gif

I was referring to game, myer centre Brisbane ;p

My apologies with the Myer price. Was a typo.

And you got me confused for a moment there, was about to say I was in JB Adeliade and they had plenty of copies when I was in there at 2pm today. Didn't realise you were talking about another state. icon_razz.gif

I got the Hardened edition $94 from kmart, is that good?
Big W doesn't have it for $78. My mum told them, they said a lot of people mentioned that price but it was still $82. Oh well.
Sorry Joseph, neglected to mention that XD Thanks for changing the price.

The JB closest to me isn't all too big, and knowing hardcore CoD fans, the people that rang me in-store probably didn't even ask at the counter at JB if they had sold out of all stock or just floor stock.

Ah well, plenty to go around for everyone icon_biggrin.gif

So do you make a new US account or something? Or do you just log in with your steam account and buy it like that?

Also, wouldn't steam check your cc details and see that its obviously NOT a US card? icon_confused.gif

Just rang JB Brisbane CBD and their computer system is still out of action, so they won't do any Trade-Ins... Getting this game is becoming such a drama.

This round-up is out of date, actually. Most of the sales ended last week or will be ending today, so I'm not correcting or changing anything. For all MW2 prices, please see this week's Australian Gaming bargains feature. Thank you.
