New 360 wireless adapter dated

360 News | Out in a few weeks. And expensive.
Microsoft has announced that the brand new Xbox 360 wireless network adapter will be available in Australia on 26 November.

The biggest advantage of the new adapter is that it supports 802.11n, allowing for higher connection speeds than the current adapter, which only supports up to 802.11g. It's also got a second antenna, which apparently gives it twice as much range.

It will cost the same as the current adapter - AUD $149.95.

According to Kotaku, Microsoft has said that the existing adapter will remain on sale, but wouldn't comment on whether or not it would see a price drop. Common sense suggests it would, but you never know.

How about just putting it inside the elite console instead?

LOL true, but a bit later for that ;)

Still, now 360 fanboys can say they have gone one up over PS3 owners who only have G wi-fi.

Finally! Been waiting for this for ages. Can't wait to have 100 Mbps (Real world speed) over the air to my 360, beats having to change cables all the time.

And have better wireless network range if you wireless network is 802.11n icon_razz.gif

I just cable my 360, which I believe all consoles should be anyway. Why rely on something less stable anyway? (since I believe for consoles, having stable connection is a must for online gaming and stuff like that).

I run my Network in the 5 GHz band and my router is strong enough to kill all the nearby wireless networks icon_lol.gif Also I still get decent signal at twice the distance from the router than my furthest wireless device.

I just started using wireless from my iMac's Airport on my PS3 last night, it's perfect. As fast and stable so far. Would like wireless on my 360 but I'm not going to buy something to use it.

I think most people would rather just have the damned thing online than pay $150 to have the very best possible connection. My 360 isn't within cabling distance of my router (at least not in a civilised manner), and the idea of having to pay $150 just for a wireless adapter on top of whatever Xbox Live Gold costs means my 360 stays staunchly disconnected. When both handheld consoles this generation have built-in wireless what's Microsoft's excuse?

I agreed with Microsoft making the Wifi optional for the 360, but the price is ridiculous!

It means if you don't need it, you don't need to pay for it. And if you want to upgrade it, you have the option to.

But if it costs an arm and a leg, how are you going to play your console with one arm?

Probably gonna make it a pretty expensive update for those that already have an Elite (such as myself).

Also, you know, it's all business. Microsoft are out to make money. Why should they care?

They cared about the price of their console at launch by trying to keep it down by not including wi-fi, but matrix-cat is right. If the DS and PSP (and iPod Touch) can all have it, then MS have missed out.

Plus, with all the cheap, failing parts inside a 360, surely adding wi-fi wouldn't have hurt the price much icon_razz.gif

15m ethernet cable from jb...like 15 bucks? Gives better connection than this scam. Even the wii has wireless built in. Pathetic Microsoft. Should be put in elite as stated

True man, this would make the cheapest 360 almost as expensive as a PS3, just for some wireless internet

Money. Pure and simple.

By not including a wireless receiver in the console they force people to buy one of these and therefore make a lot of extra money.

Plus the quality of the wireless receivers in all the consoles/handhelds are so insanely poor that you're better off running a cable even if you do have wireless. (Obviously you can't run a cable to a handheld. Hence why they have wireless)

^Don't have much problem with the Wii, to a less extent PS3 (still makes me annoyed with PS3 being so senstive to wireless dropouts, as in it dropouts more often than a PC would in the same area/range, so it deserved to be wired) but the DS, o my gosh!!! If I could change the wireless thingy inside I will.

Everytime I host a game on my DS, I have to play my DS HIGH or the games will drop out, my poor arms get so tired I just rage quit in DS Download Play now. The person was right next to me so ad-hocing shouldn't have been a problem, right? I demand all wireless adapters built-in to be easily removable and replaceable when an improvement comes out!!! For every successful DS Download Play I host there are 3x more failures!. Can't be my DS since it can connect to internet without problems.

But the wireless in my iPod Touch is excellent, so why can't consoles have the same wifi quality?

I'll make an assumption that it is because the iPod Touch is the most recent and therefore should have a better wireless nic in it.

Never ever had a problem with iPod Touch dropping out icon_biggrin.gif

Neither. I can be the furthest possible away from the computer (in the house) and still be getting a full signal and downloading stuff at full speed. Yet my PS3, like 5 metres away, only gets 75% signal strength.
